Love, Loved and a Lover

Oh, to be loved,

Must be a need to feel warm—

Warm from the cold of loneliness,

And strong from the spirit of weariness.

But aren't we already loved?

Or do we, like Thomas,

Want to see a hand,

Before we believe?

We want to be chosen based on qualifications,

But we were chosen without merit.

Or do we want to see lists,

Or get emails of approved candidates?

We seek definitions of ourselves

From vessels on a potter's shelf.

Why don't we ask the Potter,

“Am I a wanderer or a wonder?”

We tear off the original labels,

Downgrade ourselves to okrika,

Amend ourselves like clothes handed down,

Leaving the hands of the Designer

For the needle of the repairer.

Oh, the need to be loved,

So we settle for peasants,

Just to hear, “Your company is pleasant,”

Even when seated in heavenly places.

The irony of a lost prince

And a runaway princess,

Seeking validation from the crowd—

What sort of an identity crisis!

We seek for flowers

From a crowd who threw spit and stones,

Begging for roses from hands

Who were mowers and not gardeners.

We hoped the crowd would chant, “Celebrate her!”

Yet the same crowd once yelled, “Crucify Him!”

What makes you look for love from murderers—

Murderers of self-worth, purpose, dreams, visions, and identity?

So we become shapeshifters with no magic,

Become chameleons without scales,

We become small canoes on a big ocean,

Tossed by the waves of confusion,

Frustration, validation, and criticism.

And so we sink like Peter,

Because suddenly the waves are stronger than our faith—

Faith that there is a love and a Lover,

Faith that we are loved and we are longed for.
