Snow White Must Die

The Queen’s alchemist discovered a terrible truth. The endless winter gripping the kingdom was tied directly to the life of a young girl named Snow White. For seven years, the ground had remained frozen solid. No crops could grow, and the people were starving. The equation was brutal but simple: Snow White must die, or the kingdom would perish.

‎Snow White did not live in a royal palace. Instead, she stayed deep in the dark forest in a house made of ancient bones. Her companions were seven dwarves who creatures born from stone who worked the deep mines. They did not care for Snow White out of affection. They kept her because her ice magic preserved the underground veins of iron they loved to dig.

‎One freezing evening, Snow White sat quietly by the fireplace. Her skin was unnaturally pale, and her breath did not fog in the cold air.

‎"We are running out of food," the oldest dwarf, Crag, said harshly. "The winter is growing too deep. Our tools are breaking against the hard earth. If you do not die soon, we will all be buried in this frost."

‎"I know," Snow White replied quietly. "I am tired of the endless cold. If my death brings back the spring, then let it happen."

‎Suddenly, a loud knock echoed through the room.

‎Crag opened the heavy door. An old woman stood in the blizzard, wearing a bright red cloak. In her basket, she carried a single, massive apple. The fruit was a deep, dark crimson. It released a fragrance so sweet and warm that it smelled of forgotten summers, rich soil, and fresh rain.

‎"I bring a gift," the old woman whispered, looking directly at Snow White. "This apple holds the warmth of the south. One bite will break the frost in your veins."

‎Crag raised his iron hammer. "Do not touch it. The Queen sent her. It is poison."

‎The old woman laughed softly. "Of course it is poison. But consider the choice. If she eats it, the winter ends. The snow will melt, your mines will soften, and the princess will finally rest."

‎Snow White stepped forward. The beautiful scent of the fruit was irresistible. For the first time in years, she felt a surge of warmth in her chest. She took the heavy apple from the woman's bandaged hands.

‎Without hesitating, Snow White took a deep bite.

‎For one brilliant second, the taste of sweet summer sun filled her mouth. Then, the poison took effect. The apple dropped from her hand. Snow White did not cry out in pain. Instead, her skin instantly transformed into hard, blue ice. Her dark hair froze into sharp glass. She fell to the floor with a sharp crack, completely frozen like a statue.

‎The old woman smiled and vanished back into the storm.

‎Immediately, the atmosphere in the cottage changed. The freezing wind died down, and the ice on the walls began to melt into water. Outside, the heavy snowdrifts started to disappear.

‎The dwarves looked down at the frozen princess. Because her body was now solid ice, they could not bury her in the ground. Instead, they built a beautiful coffin out of clear mountain crystal and placed her inside. They carried the box to the highest peak in the forest so everyone could see the sacrifice.

‎By the next morning, the sun was shining brightly. The snow melted into rushing rivers, and green grass began to grow through the soil. The people of the kingdom celebrated the return of spring, completely forgetting about the girl on the mountain.

‎Yet, magic always moves in cycles. Deep inside the crystal coffin, underneath layers of blue ice, Snow White’s frozen heart gave a single, quiet beat. The summer had arrived, but the winter was patiently waiting to return.
