The 100 Naira Promise

It was a Wednesday in Yaba.

Rain was falling. Not the cute rain. The “soak your shoes and ruin your plans” kind.

I was broke. Like 350 naira in my account broke.

I had two options: buy lunch, or buy data to submit my assignment before 11:59pm.

I chose data.

By 2pm I was hungry and angry at myself.

That’s when I saw her.

An old mama selling cooked corn by the bus stop. Drenched. No umbrella. Only 3 cobs left.

A guy walked up, picked one, ate half, and dropped *100 naira*.

“Keep the change,” he said and walked off.

Mama didn’t argue. She just wrapped the rest of the corn in nylon and sat down.

I had 200 naira left on me.

My brain said: `Buy gala. You’re hungry.`

Something else said: `Give her the 200.`

I walked up. “Mama, how much for the 2 remaining?”

“400 my son.”

I handed her 200. “Take this. Finish early and go home. The rain is too much.”

She looked at me, then at the money, then at me again.

She didn’t say thank you. She just said:

*“God will remember this for you on the day you forget yourself.”*

Weird. But I left.

*48 Hours Later*

I got a call from a number I didn’t know.

“Is this Tunde? This is HR from. We saw your portfolio. Can you come for an interview tomorrow?”[Company]

I didn’t even apply to them.

Turns out the “guy” who ate half the corn and dropped 100 naira was their CEO. He was testing vendors that day. And he saw me too.

I got the job.

First salary: 180k.

I went back to that bus stop the next week. With an umbrella, 10k, and a new raincoat.

Mama wasn’t there.

But a young girl was selling corn in her place.

She said: “Mama said if a boy with wet shoes and kind eyes comes, give him this.”

She handed me a note.

It read: *“You fed me when you were hungry. God fed you when you needed it most. Pass it on.”*

*The Lesson*

1. *You never know who’s watching.* Character is built in the rain, not in the spotlight.

2. *Give when it hurts.* That’s when it counts.

3. *What you pour out comes back.* Sometimes as a job. Sometimes as peace.

Some people chase money.

I’m chasing moments to be that 200 naira person.

---

*CTA to keep them coming back:*

*Which part hit you most: the rain, the corn, or the note? Tell me in the comments.*

*Follow this page. I drop 1 new story + 1 real lesson every week. Don’t miss the next one.*
