THE DREAM SHE NEVER LIVED
<p>The morning sun poured through the windows of the university lecture hall as hundreds of students hurried to their seats. Some carried heavy textbooks. Others clutched notebooks filled with dreams disguised as lecture notes.<br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Among them should have been Amara.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had been one of the brightest students in secondary school. Her teachers believed she would become a lawyer, perhaps even a judge someday. She loved reading, asked thoughtful questions, and never settled for average.</p><p><br/></p><p>But sometimes, dreams die long before people do.</p><p><br/></p><p>At twenty-one, Amara no longer cared about classrooms or examinations.</p><p><br/></p><p>It wasn't because she lacked intelligence.</p><p><br/></p><p>It wasn't because she had failed.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had simply begun believing another version of success.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother planted that belief.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Look around you," she would often say. "Do you think those women driving expensive cars became rich by reading books? Beauty is a woman's greatest investment. While your mates spend years chasing certificates, you should be looking for a wealthy husband. Marry money, and life will become easy."</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara resisted at first.</p><p><br/></p><p>She wanted to graduate.</p><p><br/></p><p>She wanted a career she could proudly call her own.</p><p><br/></p><p>She dreamed of standing in a courtroom, speaking with confidence, knowing every achievement carried her own name.</p><p><br/></p><p>But day after day, the same words returned.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Education is slow."</p><p><br/></p><p>"Rich men are opportunities."</p><p><br/></p><p>"Don't suffer when your beauty can open doors."</p><p><br/></p><p>Eventually, the voice she heard most became the voice she believed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Lecture halls became unfamiliar.</p><p><br/></p><p>Assignments lost their importance.</p><p><br/></p><p>Libraries gave way to expensive restaurants.</p><p><br/></p><p>Textbooks gathered dust while designer handbags filled her wardrobe.</p><p><br/></p><p>On social media, her life looked perfect.</p><p><br/></p><p>Champagne.</p><p><br/></p><p>Vacations.</p><p><br/></p><p>Jewelry.</p><p><br/></p><p>Luxury cars.</p><p><br/></p><p>Thousands admired her.</p><p><br/></p><p>Many envied her.</p><p><br/></p><p>Few realized she owned almost none of it.</p><p><br/></p><p>She possessed comfort, but not security.</p><p><br/></p><p>Whenever another glamorous picture appeared online, her mother smiled proudly.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I told you," she would say. "Your friends are stressing over exams while you're already enjoying life."</p><p><br/></p><p>Meanwhile, those same friends kept studying.</p><p><br/></p><p>They missed parties to prepare for examinations.</p><p><br/></p><p>They sacrificed sleep for their future.</p><p><br/></p><p>People mocked them.</p><p><br/></p><p>"They're wasting their youth."</p><p><br/></p><p>But time has a way of exposing every illusion.</p><p><br/></p><p>Years later, one wealthy admirer disappeared.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then another.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some got married to other women.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some stopped answering her calls.</p><p><br/></p><p>Others simply found someone younger.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had built her future on people whose commitment lasted only as long as their interest.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then came the morning that changed everything.</p><p><br/></p><p>She stared at the pregnancy test.</p><p><br/></p><p>Positive.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her hands trembled.</p><p><br/></p><p>The room suddenly felt too small.</p><p><br/></p><p>The man responsible denied the pregnancy.</p><p><br/></p><p>Soon afterward, his number became unreachable.</p><p><br/></p><p>His promises vanished overnight.</p><p><br/></p><p>Terrified, Amara rushed to the hospital, hoping to erase what she believed was a mistake.</p><p><br/></p><p>After several examinations, the doctor returned with a calm but serious expression.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I'm sorry," he said gently. "Because of your medical condition, ending this pregnancy would be extremely dangerous. It could permanently damage your womb. You may never be able to have children again."</p><p><br/></p><p>The words echoed through her mind.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had entered the hospital hoping to escape one consequence.</p><p><br/></p><p>She left carrying a future she never planned for.</p><p><br/></p><p>Broken and afraid, she returned home.</p><p><br/></p><p>She expected comfort.</p><p><br/></p><p>She expected guidance.</p><p><br/></p><p>Instead, her mother exploded.</p><p><br/></p><p>"What have you done?"</p><p><br/></p><p>"You've brought shame to this family!"</p><p><br/></p><p>"You've ruined your life!"</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara stood speechless.</p><p><br/></p><p>The woman who had encouraged her to pursue wealthy men now spoke as though she had walked that road alone.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her mother never admitted her influence.</p><p><br/></p><p>Never apologized.</p><p><br/></p><p>Never said, "I was wrong."</p><p><br/></p><p>That day, Amara learned one of life's hardest lessons.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not everyone who gives advice will share the consequences.</p><p><br/></p><p>Months later, she sat beside her newborn daughter.</p><p><br/></p><p>She loved the little girl with every part of her heart.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her tears were never because of the child.</p><p><br/></p><p>They were for the dream she had abandoned.</p><p><br/></p><p>One evening she opened social media.</p><p><br/></p><p>Her former classmates appeared one after another.</p><p><br/></p><p>One had graduated from medical school.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another had become an engineer.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another had been called to the Nigerian Bar.</p><p><br/></p><p>Another had built a thriving business.</p><p><br/></p><p>Their smiles were different.</p><p><br/></p><p>They were not borrowed.</p><p><br/></p><p>They were earned.</p><p><br/></p><p>No designer handbag could replace the confidence of independence.</p><p><br/></p><p>No luxury hotel could replace the peace of honest achievement.</p><p><br/></p><p>For the first time in years, Amara admitted the truth.</p><p><br/></p><p>She had mistaken comfort for success.</p><p><br/></p><p>Attention for love.</p><p><br/></p><p>Luxury for achievement.</p><p><br/></p><p>And the loudest voice in her life for wisdom.</p><p><br/></p><p>That night, she searched through an old box and found one of her university textbooks.</p><p><br/></p><p>Dust covered its pages.</p><p><br/></p><p>Inside was a sentence she had underlined years before.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Knowledge is a treasure that follows its owner everywhere."</p><p><br/></p><p>She smiled through tears.</p><p><br/></p><p>Perhaps her dream had been delayed.</p><p><br/></p><p>But it had not died.</p><p><br/></p><p>The road ahead would be harder now.</p><p><br/></p><p>She was a mother.</p><p><br/></p><p>She carried responsibilities she had never imagined.</p><p><br/></p><p>Still, she refused to surrender again.</p><p><br/></p><p>She enrolled in evening classes, studying after putting her daughter to sleep. Every lecture, every assignment, every examination reminded her that delayed dreams can still bloom when they are not abandoned.</p><p><br/></p><p>Years later, her daughter asked,</p><p><br/></p><p>"Mommy, what's the most important thing you ever learned?"</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara smiled and held her close.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Never measure your worth by someone else's wealth. Build your own. Never trade your future for temporary comfort. And never accept advice simply because it comes from someone you love. Love without wisdom can still lead you astray."</p><p><br/></p><p>Her daughter nodded quietly.</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara looked toward the future with hope.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some dreams die because life is cruel.</p><p><br/></p><p>Others die because we surrender them.</p><p><br/></p><p>But as long as there is breath, no dream is beyond resurrection.</p><p><br/></p><p>Marsal.✍️</p>
