Prologue...

In a world shaped by rapid technological advancement, a quiet battle for relevance unfolds between books and social media. In the quest to impart knowledge and exert influence, books offer depth, while social media delivers speedāoften at the cost of depth. Two powerful forces race forward, each raising its own cloud of dust

Scene: Jay and Joshās bedroom, late afternoon. Both sit on the bed, working on an assignment with a laptop and notebooks spread in front of them,

Jay: (scrolls through the laptop,) Hey, Josh, I found it! Johannes Gutenbergāhe invented the printing press! And I got this info in just a few seconds omoāGOD thank you for social media oš..

Josh: (pauses, leans back, frowning) Yeah, I see it..... but thatās what worries me guy. Weāre becoming so dependent on this social media for every bit of knowledge we seek.

Jay: (shrugging) But isnāt that the point? Social media lets everyone tap into knowledge they never had beforeāno waiting, no hard research. Just keep SCROLLING. The more you scroll, the more your SCROLLSš (winks)š

Josh:(hisses... Sarcastically) For your plastic mind.š But seriously guy, come to think of it, we get quick access to knowledge through social media..fine, but should speed allow misinformation? Fake news are everywhere now all in the name of getting information online. You should know that the urge to really dish out knowledge has been commercialized into the rush to generate traffic and income.

Jay: Okay... I agree, but you can't deny the fact that this is happening because social media has replaced books in terms of getting knowledge and exerting influence. Now, how long did it take for these books (points to the textbooks opened before them) to get distributed? Months! Or even more than that sef! Tell me, how long does it take for a single post to spread? Within minutes! Your post is out to reach millions guy! (leans forward) Dey hear me o, after you read a book and you have a feedback to give, are you always able to..(smiles and pauses) šlet me pity you... (chuckles) how fast are you able to send feedbacks with paperwork? Well... you also should know the ease of sending feedbacks through comments, reviews and so on with an instant delivery!! Both content and comment..delivered with speed!

Josh: Bro, does speed equals lasting preservation of knowledge? Let me also ask you, tell me how well you remember these books that we read yesterday (points to the textbooks on the bed) and how well you remember the content you read or watched few hours ago! Is it even one?... That's the problem! You consume a lot within minutes and end up with a shallow understanding. That's why it can't stay with you for long, š¤because while one was struggling for space in your head others are already bragging for memory rights. At the end, nothing stays... With books, you stay focused unlike social media, one minute you're reading a news on X, the next minute a notification of the latest trend drags you to TikTok. How do you balance depth with that?š¤·

Jay: Pele o, Pacific Ocean š. Depth does not outweigh the possibility of errors too o. How do writers correct errors found in a book? Gbam!š Another full blown book! You'll be hearing "Revised Edition"! Another book to buy! Guyyy....with social media, just hit the 'edit' button! š«Besides, don't we have e-books online to read now? Which is better... Having 13 pdf files or struggling to sort 13 books to read like I want to compile the Book Of Life?

Josh: Just say you are lazy to carry books...š

Jay: Why won't I be?? Who you wan kill with load?š¤Ø

Josh: (waves him off with a hand) No ask me....(suddenly jolts) Okaayy.... Let me ask you a question (leans forward with squinted eyes) Would you rather be called a bookworm or a social media addict?

Jay:(sighs) Josh.. š¤¦(mutters) which kind old school be this.. Guy you're just...arrghh! (Stands up to leave)

Josh: Hey! Come back here o! Shebi you can argue! (Stands up quickly to chase him) Jay!!

Joshs voice (offstage, laughing): Better come back and let's finish this assignment..

Epilogue

Over time, the spread of knowledge has evolved from oral tradition to books, and now to social mediaānot by replacement, but by advancement. Oral means is still in use, Books still preserve depth and structure, while social media provides speed and reach. Together, they shape how knowledge and influence flow today.

Perhaps the real issue is not a battle between books and social mediaābut the struggle to maintain balance.
