The Groom Who Waited
<p>The first person to leave was the photographer.</p><p><br/></p><p>He packed away his cameras without saying a word, avoiding my eyes as though disappointment was contagious.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then the florist began collecting the arrangements.</p><p><br/></p><p>One by one, guests slipped out of the church, each pretending they had somewhere urgent to be.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody knew what to say to the groom who had been standing at the altar for three hours.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not even me.</p><p><br/></p><p>My best man placed a hand on my shoulder.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Let's go home."</p><p><br/></p><p>I shook my head.</p><p><br/></p><p>"She said she'd come."</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked toward the church doors before answering.</p><p><br/></p><p>"I don't think she's coming."</p><p><br/></p><p>I wanted to argue, but the silence had already said everything.</p><p><br/></p><p>The choir had gone home.</p><p><br/></p><p>The candles had burned low.</p><p><br/></p><p>Even the priest had quietly removed his robe and wished me strength.</p><p><br/></p><p>Still, I waited.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because twelve hours earlier, she'd kissed me goodbye and whispered, "I'll meet you at the altar."</p><p><br/></p><p>She wasn't the kind of woman who broke promises.</p><p><br/></p><p>By sunset, someone had taken a photo of me sitting alone in the front pew.</p><p><br/></p><p>By midnight, it was everywhere.</p><p><br/></p><p>ABANDONED GROOM WAITS HOURS FOR BRIDE WHO NEVER CAME.</p><p><br/></p><p>The internet did what it always does.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some called me pathetic.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some said I must have done something terrible to deserve it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Strangers invented stories about a relationship they'd never seen.</p><p><br/></p><p>By morning, my phone had become unbearable.</p><p><br/></p><p>Journalists.</p><p><br/></p><p>Bloggers.</p><p><br/></p><p>Old classmates.</p><p><br/></p><p>Even people I hadn't spoken to in years wanted to know how it felt to be humiliated in front of hundreds of people.</p><p><br/></p><p>Nobody asked the only question that mattered.</p><p><br/></p><p>Where was she?</p><p><br/></p><p>On the third day, there was a knock at my door.</p><p><br/></p><p>Two police officers stood outside.</p><p><br/></p><p>One of them removed his cap.</p><p><br/></p><p>"Mr. Daniel Adebayo?"</p><p><br/></p><p>"Yes."</p><p><br/></p><p>"We need you to come with us."</p><p><br/></p><p>They drove me to the city morgue.</p><p><br/></p><p>Every part of me wanted to believe there had been a mistake.</p><p><br/></p><p>There was.</p><p><br/></p><p>The body wasn't hers.</p><p><br/></p><p>But the woman lying on the metal table was wearing my fiancée's wedding dress.</p><p><br/></p><p>My knees almost gave way.</p><p><br/></p><p>"We found this," the detective said quietly, handing me a bouquet wrapped in clear plastic.</p><p><br/></p><p>Inside the flowers was a folded note.</p><p><br/></p><p>My name was written across it.</p><p><br/></p><p>I unfolded it with shaking hands.</p><p><br/></p><p>The handwriting wasn't hers.</p><p><br/></p><p>It contained only six words.</p><p><br/></p><p>She never meant to leave you.</p><p><br/></p><p>That was the moment I stopped believing I'd been abandoned.</p><p><br/></p><p>Someone had made sure she never reached the altar.</p>
