THE IMAGE OF GOD

This morning, during our family devotion, my dad asked a very simple question:

“What image were we created in?”

The answer came almost immediately “God’s image.”

Of course. We’ve heard it countless times.

But then he asked, “What does it actually mean to be made in God’s image?”

And for the first time, I realized I didn’t really know how to answer.

I started thinking about how we often interpret it.

God has a head, we have a head.

God has hands, we have hands.

God has eyes, we have eyes.

Some people even talk about God’s complexion as though He must look exactly like a particular group of people.

But then, where does that leave everyone else?

If being made in God’s image is about physical appearance, does God have every complexion?

Does he change form depending on who is looking at him?

What about someone born blind, someone who cannot walk, or those with six fingers and we have five?

Are they somehow less of God’s image?

And that was when the question became much deeper for me.

Maybe being made in God’s image was never primarily about what we look like.

Maybe it is about what He put inside us.

The ability to create, to think, to imagine, to love, to reason, to build, to communicate, to choose, to have dominion.

To bring something into existence that was not there before.

God creates, and we create.

God thinks, and He gave us the ability to think.

God loves, and He gave us the capacity to love.

God gives purpose, and He gave us the ability to live with purpose.

Maybe that's why, immediately after creating man in His image, God said, “Be fruitful and multiply.”

There was something of Him in us that was meant to produce.

And perhaps being made in God's image is not simply about being called Christians.

It is about recognizing that we carry something of our Creator's nature within us.

John 1:12 says that those who receive Him are given the power to become children of God.

So maybe the question isn't only, “Do I believe I was made in God's image?”

Maybe the better question is

“What am I doing with the image of God that I carry?”

Because if His image is in me, then there should be something about the way I think, create, love, live and influence the world that points back to Him.
