THE MANAGER'S PLAYBOOK ||| ( Manager Contracts and Key Clauses )

Manager Contracts and Key Clauses

1. Commission Rate:

Defines the manager’s percentage and the income streams it covers. Some contracts are based on gross income, but I personally recommend negotiating on net earnings so the artist isn’t at a loss after expenses.

2. Sunset Clause:

Protects the manager’s income even after the contract ends, allowing them to keep earning a small percentage (e.g., 5%) for a limited period or for life on deals they helped secure.

This is especially fair for managers who discovered and developed the artist.

3. Power of Attorney (POA):

Some manager contracts grant the manager legal rights to sign documents or make business decisions on behalf of the artist.

It’s powerful but risky, artists should ensure it’s strictly limited to business matters, not creative control.

4. Exclusivity Clause:

States whether the manager can represent other artists at the same time.

For example, Muyiwa Awoniyi, Tems’ manager, signed a non-exclusive deal, which allowed him to also represent Omah Lay at some point.

5. Termination Clause:

Outlines how the contract can end and how pending commissions will be settled.

Many managers, especially those who built with the artist from day one, are protected from being dropped abruptly. Exits are usually guided by pre-set terms agreed upon in the contract.

Qualities of a Great Artist Manager

1. Strategic thinker with a clear vision

2. Excellent communicator and negotiator

3. Emotionally intelligent, able to handle egos and pressure

4. Financially literate and legally aware

5. Loyal and transparent with earnings

6. Resourceful and well-connected

7. Mature enough to handle public situations with wisdom

(Not every negative claim against your artist needs a lawsuit, sometimes, silence fuels curiosity and strengthens the brand.)

Final Word

A good manager isn’t just someone who moves with you rather they’re someone who moves things for you.

They don’t chase clout; they chase results.

If you find a manager who truly believes in your vision, protect that partnership.

Because in this business, great managers don’t just manage careers, they build legacies.

I have a lot more to share on this topic based on experience.

If you’re an aspiring manager or artist, keep up with my posts you will learn a lot, you can also tell aspiring artists about me 🙏

If there are things you don't understand very well from this article, ask I will explain in the comment section.

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
