The Pressure to Look Successful When You're Still Struggling
<p style="text-align: justify; "><strong><br/></strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong style="background-color: transparent;">WE DON'T WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL ANYMORE. WE WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW IT.</strong></p><p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Somewhere along the way, success stopped being a private fact and became a public performance, and now half of us are broke, unsure, or barely holding it together, while acting like we've got it all figured out.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">I remember catching up with old friends at an event once, guys clearly doing well in their fields. Somewhere in the small talk, I heard myself blurting out how much I earned, even though everyone at that table made more than I did. Nobody asked. I just needed them to know I wasn't behind. I still cringe when I think about it. 😂</span></p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong style="background-color: transparent;"><br/></strong></p><p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong style="background-color: transparent;">Nobody Posts the Waiting Room</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">You see the new job. Not the six months of silence before it. You see the trip abroad. Not the three visa rejections. You see the engagement photos. Not the doubt that came before them.</span></p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">We only ever see each other's finish lines, which is exactly why everyone else's race looks shorter than ours</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;"><br/></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;"><strong>The Quiet Rules We're All Obeying<br/></strong></span></p><ul><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Post the win. Bury the wait.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Buy the thing you can't afford, because looking broke feels riskier than being broke.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Hide the fact that you're back home with your parents, as if that weren't just math.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Watch a friend get married, relocate, buy a car, and silently recalculate where you "should" be.</span></li><li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Borrow money to protect an image of not needing any.</span></li></ul><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;">None of this is vanity. It's what happens when a generation learns that struggle is shameful and only the highlight reel is safe to show.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Looking Successful Isn't Being Successful</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">One is a performance; it needs an audience, a caption, a silence about the hard parts. The other is quieter: paying your own rent, showing up after the fifth rejection, living a life only you actually have to live in.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Chasing the performance never satisfies you. There's always someone's reel that looks better than yours, because the comparison was never built to end.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong><br/></strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>You're Not Behind. You're In a Season.</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Struggling privately doesn't mean you're failing. It means you're between two points in a story that hasn't finished yet. What actually exhausts people isn't the hard season; it's the energy spent pretending they're not in one.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong style="background-color: transparent;">The Freedom Nobody Tells You About</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Let go of the performance, and something loosens. You're allowed to be in progress, loudly or quietly, without that being a verdict on your worth.</span></p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Maybe the goal was never to look like you have it together.</strong></p><p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: transparent;"><strong>Maybe it was just to actually get there.</strong></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: transparent;"><em>Second piece in a series on "<strong>The Things Nobody Prepared Us For"</strong>. Read the first: "We Were Prepared to Graduate, Not to Live".</em></span></p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p>
