The quiet kind of belonging

used to think something was wrong with me because I liked to be alone. I just didn't care about trying to be "popular" or fitting in like everybody else. So I'd do things alone. And people would call me a loner. Like there was something wrong with enjoying your own company.

‎

‎Classmates would make fun of me for daydreaming, saying I was zoning out into outer space. I probably was though. I was probably imaging being anywhere but that tiny little classroom filled with kids trying to be who they're not, just to be liked. But I get it. I guess. We all long to belong. To something.

‎

‎But for me, I just needed a couple people who understood me, and I was okay with that. And I'm still that way. A few good friends, and I'm good. 1 don't have the time or energy anyway to maintain too many friendships.

‎And even though I'm alone a lot, I'm not lonely. In fact, I've often felt the loneliest being in rooms full of people I didn't know. Even with people I did know. I still felt alone. But I love who I am. I'm at peace with who I am. And maybe I'm not meant to be understood. I'm just meant to be me.

‎
