The Things We Don’t Say Out Loud

There are sentences we swallow every day,

Words that sit in our chest but never find their way.

“I’m tired.”

Not the sleep kind,

The soul kind… the o ti re mi kind.

“I’m trying.”

Even when it looks like I’m failing,

Even when the road feels like it’s constantly derailing.

“I’m not okay.”

But who wants to hear that in a world that celebrates “I’m fine”?

So we rehearse smiles and perform like it’s showtime.

We say, “I dey alright,”

Even when nothing feels right.

We laugh loud… just to silence the fight inside.

Because somewhere along the line,

Vulnerability became a crime.

So we bottle it up,

Lock it in,

Hide it deep under skin.

We say, “Ko si wahala,”

But our hearts whisper, “Wahala plenty.”

We say, “Mo strong,”

But strength is getting heavy.

We say, “It is well,”

But we don’t even know if we believe it ourselves.

There are dreams we’re scared to say out loud,

Fears we bury beneath “I’m proud,”

Tears we blink back in public crowds.

Because who do you tell

When everyone else is also pretending to be okay?

Who do you lean on

When it feels like everyone might break?

So we carry it,

Quietly.

Carefully.

Like fragile glass in steady hands.

But listen…

Maybe strength is not in silence.

Maybe healing is not in hiding.

Maybe the words you’re afraid to say

Are the ones that will set you free.

So today, I’ll say it.

I’m tired.

I’m trying.

I’m still becoming.

And maybe…

That is enough.

What’s something you’ve been afraid to say out loud?
