The Unseen Damage (Pt. 2)

They say that when you're about to die, your entire life flashes before your eyes.

Maybe that's what was happening right now.

Every moment of her life replayed in her mind, and one question echoed over and over.

How did I get here? Where did it all go wrong?

How did she go from being a golden child, surrounded by love, to a place where pain had become all she knew?

Then she remembered.

It all began after her parents divorced. Because of the nature of her father's job, he traveled constantly, so he left her in the care of his brother and his wife whenever he was away.

She became the one who did every chore in the house. She ate yesterday's leftovers while everyone else ate fresh meals. The money her father sent for her education was spent on her cousins instead.

The beatings became as common as the sunrise.

Today, she had been sent to buy seasoning cubes. Somewhere on the way home, she lost one.

That was enough.

Her aunt rushed at her. The shouting came first, then the blows. She struck her again and again until she hit her with a pistol, sending her to the ground.

She didn't cry.

She simply lay there.

The people who were meant to protect her were nowhere to be found.

As the darkness slowly closed in, she stopped fighting it.

The darkness closed in....

The shouting faded into silence. Then everything went black.
