"They Weren't In Love But This Is A Love Story"

This first hit me when I watched “The Half of It” back in 2024. Ellie Chu was riding a train, leaving her small town to follow her dreams and study art. Then Paul Munsky ran after it, not to stop her but to see her face for a little bit longer, to make her laugh and let her know how much he'd miss her.

“This isn't a love story,” Ellie had said at the beginning but she was wrong.

That part, Paul running after the train, had sat with me as the most beautiful part of the film. I'm sure some people were disappointed, as they expected more moments between Ellie and Aster (Ellie's love interest). I was more interested in Ellie's friendship with Paul (sorry, y'all.)

I was also deeply affected by her complicated relationship with her dad and how they clearly still loved each other, despite everything.

And I realized: I was in it for the love, but not the love story.

Society sells us this notion that romantic love is the goal, it's what everyone should strive towards. I think that's bullshit.

Obviously, I'm not saying romantic love doesn't matter but what about dazzling earth-shattering friendship? I detest that term, ‘more than friends’ because why is friendship automatically deemed lesser than?

My friends are everything to me. I hurt when they hurt, and I'd marry any of them if they ask but I'm not in love with them. I want to grow old with them, have children with them, be together forever.

I love them with every single drop of blood in my body, and I don't love them any less just because it's platonic. Just because it's not romantic.

We as a society need to do better because I wouldn't run after a train for a guy but I would for my friends. And that's it. That's it.

Ellie had laughed at Paul, as he ran with a stupid grin on his face. She thought him stupid but she loved him too. It was a love story, just not a romantic one.
