Understand Purpose (Discovering why you exist)

WHY YOU EXIST

Purpose is one of the most important things a person can discover in life. It is the reason behind our existence, the assignment we are meant to fulfil, and the impact we are called to make while we are here on earth. Purpose gives direction to life. Without a sense of purpose, a person may achieve many things and still feel empty or confused.

Purpose is not simply about having a good job, making money, becoming famous, or achieving academic success. These things can be part of our journey, but purpose goes deeper. Purpose answers the question: “Why am I here?”

Every individual has something valuable to contribute to the world. We all have different gifts, abilities, experiences, interests, and opportunities. These things can provide clues to what we may be called to do. Sometimes, the things we naturally enjoy doing or the problems we strongly desire to solve can point us toward our purpose.

Purpose and God

For Christians, purpose is closely connected to God. God created every person intentionally and has a plan for their life. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. This reminds us that our lives are not accidental.

Discovering purpose therefore involves seeking God, developing our relationship with Him, studying His Word, praying, and paying attention to the abilities and opportunities He gives us.

Purpose Is a Journey

Purpose is not always discovered overnight. For some people, it becomes clearer as they grow, learn, experience different situations, and understand themselves better. It is important not to compare your journey with someone else's.

You may not have everything figured out today, and that is okay. What matters is that you continue to learn, grow, and take meaningful steps in the direction you believe you are being led.

Your Gifts Can Point Toward Your Purpose

Your talents and abilities can be clues to your purpose. If you naturally enjoy helping people, teaching, encouraging, creating, solving problems, leading, listening, or caring for others, these abilities may be useful in fulfilling your purpose.

However, having a gift is not enough. Gifts need to be developed. A person may have great potential, but without discipline, learning, and consistent effort, that potential may remain unused.

Purpose Requires Preparation

Sometimes people want to fulfil their purpose without going through preparation. But preparation is part of purpose.

Education, difficult experiences, failures, relationships, work, and even seasons of waiting can teach us important lessons. What feels like a delay may actually be preparation for something greater.

Do not despise the season you are currently in. Learn from it. Develop yourself. Build your character. Gain knowledge. Improve your skills. The person you are becoming is important to the purpose you will eventually fulfil.

Purpose Is Bigger Than You

True purpose is not only about what you can gain; it is also about what you can give.

A purposeful life asks questions such as:

- Who can I help?

- What problem can I solve?

- What difference can I make?

- What can I contribute to my family, community, church, or society?

- How can my life positively affect other people?

When your gifts become useful to others, your purpose begins to produce impact.

Do Not Compare Your Purpose With Others

One of the greatest distractions from purpose is comparison. Someone else's success does not mean that you are failing.

People have different timelines, abilities, opportunities, and assignments. Your journey may look different from another person's journey, and that does not make yours less valuable.

Instead of asking, “Why am I not where they are?”, ask, “What can I do with what I have today?”

Purpose Requires Courage

There may be times when people do not understand your vision. Some may discourage you or make you feel that your dreams are too big. You must learn to believe in the possibilities God has placed within you while remaining humble enough to learn and grow.

Fear can make people abandon their potential. Do not allow the fear of failure to prevent you from trying.

Conclusion

Purpose gives meaning, direction, and significance to life. It is not merely about becoming successful; it is about becoming useful and fulfilling the reason for which you were created.

You may not know everything about your purpose today, but you can begin by knowing yourself, discovering your gifts, serving others, developing your abilities, seeking God, and taking one step at a time.

Your life has value. Your story matters. There are people you may be able to encourage, help, teach, inspire, or positively influence.

You were not created just to exist. You were created to make an impact.

The journey of discovering purpose may take time, but every step of growth can bring you closer to understanding the unique assignment that your life carries.
