We Don’t Ask Enough Questions About Where We’re From

Not the basic questions.

Not “what state?” or “what tribe?”

Those ones come easy.

I mean the real questions.

The uncomfortable ones.

The curious ones.

The ones that don’t have quick answers.

Like,

Who were we before everything changed?

Before borders were drawn

with lines that didn’t ask for permission.

Before names were shortened,

twisted,

or replaced.

Before certain stories became louder than others.

Because somewhere along the line,

we stopped digging.

We accepted what we were told.

We memorized history just enough to pass exams,

not enough to understand it.

And now, we walk around with identities

we didn’t fully explore.

We say where we’re from,

but do we really know what that means?

Do we know the stories behind the names we carry?

The meanings behind the traditions we repeat?

The reasons behind the things we call “normal”?

Or did we just inherit them

without question?

Because history is not just about the past.

It shapes how we see ourselves now.

It influences what we value,

what we ignore,

what we aspire to become.

And sometimes,

what we choose to forget.

There’s a kind of disconnect that comes

when you don’t fully understand your roots.

You move forward,

but something always feels slightly… missing.

Not obvious.

Not loud.

Just subtle.

Like reading a story

where a few pages are gone.

And maybe that’s why it matters.

Not to dwell in the past

but to understand the foundation you’re standing on.

Because when you know where you’re coming from,

you move differently.

You question more.

You appreciate more.

You even choose differently.

Knowing your origin is not about pride alone.

It’s about clarity.

Because when you don’t ask questions about where you’re from,

You might end up building a life

on answers you never verified.

A proud student of HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES😌🤏
