What We Left Behind

What We Left Behind

I still find pieces of you

in songs that suddenly feel heavier,

in quiet rooms,

in moments I wish I could relive.

We were once a language

only we could understand,

two hearts speaking without words,

until somewhere between the silence

and the distance,

we forgot how to translate each other.

Now your name is just a memory

I don't dare to remember,

a photograph in the mind

that refuses to fade with time.

I thought losing you

would sound like thunder—

Deafening and loud

but it was quieter than that.

Just an ordinary morning

when I realized

I no longer had someone to tell everything to.

And maybe that's the cruelest part:

not that you left,

but that the world kept moving

as if nothing had changed.

So I'll let the memories stay

without letting them keep me.

I'll remember what we were,

but I won't live there.

Some things end

not because they meant nothing,

but because they meant enough

to change us.

And if someday

your name doesn't hurt anymore,

I'll know I didn't forget you.

I simply learned

how to carry the memory

without carrying the pain.
