Long before gaining admission into Lagos State University, I had always been curious and eager to understand the rationale behind the interaction of states. What aims and motives do states hope to achieve in their relations with one another?

After becoming a student of International Studies and attending several classes, I began to understand the basic reasons behind these interactions.

In today’s interconnected world, no state can exist alone or in isolation. Countries build relationships with one another for many important reasons, all tied to survival, development, and national interest.

To begin with, states relate with each other to promote economic growth. Through trade, investment, and access to global markets, countries gain resources they cannot produce on their own. No nation is fully self-sufficient, which makes economic cooperation essential.

Also, states interact to ensure political and security stability. Alliances, peace agreements, and diplomatic partnerships help countries protect themselves, prevent conflicts, and maintain peaceful borders. International cooperation reduces the chances of war and encourages peaceful solutions to disputes.

In addition, states build relations to exchange knowledge and technology. From education to health to scientific research, countries benefit from sharing ideas, innovations, and expertise. This exchange helps them address local and global challenges more effectively.

Moreover, states relate with each other to gain influence and recognition. Diplomacy enables countries to promote their values, defend their interests, and participate in global decision-making. Being active in international affairs strengthens a state’s position in the world.

Be that as it may, do you think states relate because cooperation brings benefits that isolation cannot provide?

Let me know your thoughts and opinions in the comments.

At the end of each month, we give out cash prizes to 5 people with the best insights in the past month
as well as coupon points to 15 people who didn't make the top 5, but shared high-quality content.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
