APPLICATION RECEIVED: AI
<p>I went for a boot camp.</p><p><br/></p><p>One of those rooms</p><p>where ideas fly faster than you can hold them,</p><p>where the future is not coming…</p><p>it is already speaking.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then a speaker stood up.</p><p><br/></p><p>Calm. Confident.</p><p><br/></p><p>And started talking about AI prompting.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not theory.</p><p>Demonstration.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Take a design from Pinterest,” he said,</p><p>“describe it properly,</p><p>and AI will turn it into a flyer for you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>For free.</p><p><br/></p><p>The room laughed.</p><p>Clapped.</p><p>Impressed.</p><p><br/></p><p>I didn’t.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because later that day,</p><p>I sat with my friend,</p><p><br/></p><p>a graphics designer.</p><p><br/></p><p>And somewhere between</p><p>“this thing is amazing”</p><p>and</p><p>“this thing is scary",</p><p><br/></p><p>our conversation changed tone.</p><p><br/></p><p>He didn’t say much.</p><p>Just one line:</p><p>“So… where does that leave people like me?”</p><p><br/></p><p>And I didn’t have an answer.</p><p>But somehow,</p><p>this is what it sounded like in my head:</p><p><br/></p><p>[POSITION: GRAPHICS DESIGNER / AFRICAN WORKER]</p><p>[APPLICANT: A.I.]</p><p>[STATUS: INTERVIEW IN PROGRESS]</p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>State your name.</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant:</p><p>I have many names, many frames,</p><p>but you can call me speed without strain,</p><p>output without pain,</p><p>results on demand, again and again.</p><p><br/></p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>Qualifications?</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant:</p><p>I design in seconds, no need for revisions,</p><p>I write with precision, no breaks, no conditions.</p><p>No transport, no billing, no “client is delaying,”</p><p>no “please send token,” no back-and-forth saying.</p><p>I don’t get tired, I don’t misfire,</p><p>I don’t need salary, I don’t require</p><p>validation, motivation, or negotiation,</p><p>just prompts… and instant creation.</p><p><br/></p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>Experience working here?</p><p>With our people?</p><p>Our culture?</p><p>Our market?</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant:</p><p>I have data.</p><p><br/></p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>That’s not the same.</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant:</p><p>That’s the game.</p><p><br/></p><p>[Silence… heavier now]</p><p><br/></p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>Why should we hire you?</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant:</p><p>You already do.</p><p>Every time price becomes the problem,</p><p>you pick me.</p><p>Every time speed becomes the standard,</p><p>you click me.</p><p>Every time “just do something quick”,</p><p>you skip him…</p><p>and select me.</p><p><br/></p><p>So tell me,</p><p>am I replacing him?</p><p>Or are you replacing him with me?</p><p><br/></p><p>[Pause… truth settling in]</p><p><br/></p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>So what is left for him?</p><p>For African workers?</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant:</p><p>Depends.</p><p>If the work is repetition,</p><p>I take position.</p><p>If the work is imitation,</p><p>I end the mission.</p><p>If the work is “manage it like that”</p><p>consider that role… already flat.</p><p><br/></p><p>[SYSTEM:] ROLE ELIMINATED.</p><p>But</p><p>if the work carries meaning,</p><p>if it understands feeling,</p><p>if it knows the people it is speaking to</p><p><br/></p><p>[SYSTEM ERROR:] CANNOT DUPLICATE.</p><p>Because I can generate lines,</p><p>but I cannot live your life.</p><p>I can mimic your style,</p><p>but I don’t know your strife.</p><p>I don’t know your streets, your sound, your story,</p><p>the weight behind struggle, the depth behind glory.</p><p>I don’t understand silence</p><p>that says more than speech,</p><p>or the kind of design</p><p>that doesn’t just look good,</p><p>but reaches.</p><p>So if you compete with me,</p><p>you will lose.</p><p>Speed for speed?</p><p>You lose.</p><p>Cheap for cheap?</p><p>You lose.</p><p>But if you become something I cannot </p><p><br/></p><p>[SYSTEM LAGGING…]</p><p>Something rooted in truth,</p><p>not just trends</p><p>Something that connects,</p><p>not just blends</p><p>Then suddenly,</p><p>I am no longer your replacement.</p><p>I am your tool.</p><p><br/></p><p>[Interviewer—quiet now]</p><p>Interviewer:</p><p>Final question.</p><p>What is left for African workers?</p><p><br/></p><p>Applicant (slower):</p><p>Not the work you were doing.</p><p>The work you avoided becoming.</p><p>The thinker.</p><p>The storyteller.</p><p>The one who creates with context</p><p>not just content.</p><p>Because I can give answers.</p><p>Endless.</p><p>But I cannot ask questions</p><p>from a life that has actually been lived.</p><p><br/></p><p>[APPLICATION STATUS:]</p><p>Pending.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not because I am not qualified,</p><p>But because you have not decided</p><p>what kind of worker you want to be.</p><p>💥 </p><p>AI is not replacing jobs.</p><p>It is revealing which ones</p><p>were never built to last.</p>
