Beware of False Prophets

The digital space is very much saturated with information from countless sources, with most of them being unverified. As an Internet consumer, it is important to be vigilant when looking for verified information. With the general political atmosphere on the African continent, people are bound to stumble on information from various sources. Whether it is from a WhatsApp status, Facebook, Instagram or X post, people can share things that are not true.

Taking Cameroon for example, the Post-electoral season has been marked with violence, arson, looting and lock downs in some regions. However, in other regions that are presumably calmer, some people have been posting misleading information about shootings, creating panick among the citizens when there was actually nothing wrong.

To ensure that the information you're consuming is trusted, one can do the following :

Follow verified accounts like Reuters, BBC, AFP, and the legal media in your country;

If you see news on a non-verified account/source, ask questions if possible or check from verified sources to confirm.

These tips can ensure proper communication among the citizens and provide a safe space for information sharing, hence contributing to social progress. We have to be very careful when checking information online, in order to avoid misinformation.

What is your take on fake news? Do you have any other tip you'd love to share? Let me know in the comment section.
