Chapter 1

I knew my fiancé’s parents didn’t like me. It wasn’t obvious, but I could feel it.

It wasn’t that they hated me as a person they just didn’t want me as their daughter-in-law. They already had someone else in mind for their son.

Kelvin, my fiancé, had a childhood friend named Anita. They were extremely close, and everyone believed they were the endgame until I came into the picture.

I met Kelvin in my third year at the university. He was also in his third year. From then on, our journey was a mix of rosy and rough moments, but we held each other through it all.

So naturally, everyone including his family was surprised when he brought me home as the woman he planned to marry.

His parents, especially his mother, made it her personal mission to make me feel unwanted every time I visited.

"Kelvin, how’s Anita? It’s been a while since I heard from her,” his mother would ask.

“She’s fine, I guess,” he’d reply.

“You guess? You don’t care about that beautiful girl anymore?”

She always brought her up especially when she knew I was around.

She always did this whenever she knew I was around the house.

At first, I laughed it off awkwardly, of course but deep down, I felt the weight of being compared to a ghost of a woman who wasn’t even in the room.

Kelvin noticed. He always noticed.

He would squeeze my hand under the table, sometimes roll his eyes subtly, or change the topic when things got uncomfortable. But he never directly corrected her, never spoke up for me. Maybe he didn’t want to “disrespect” her. Maybe he was scared of stirring conflict. But it left me feeling alone, unwelcome like a guest in a place I was supposed to one day call home.
