Chapter 3

As time went on, Anita started doing...more.

At first, I thought I was overthinking things. But no, it was obvious. She’d suddenly start showing up whenever I visited Kelvin’s family home unannounced but always “just in the area.” And somehow, she always looked just right not overdressed, but never casual either. Always polished, wearing light makeup and a perfume you couldn’t ignore.

Once, I wore a simple maxi gown, and Anita arrived in a fitted jumpsuit that turned heads, including Kelvin’s. I caught the quick glance he gave her, and though he quickly looked away, I didn’t forget. My heart didn’t forget.

Then came the memory games. She’d always find a way to bring up something only she and Kelvin shared.

One Sunday afternoon, as we all sat in the living room, Anita laughed and said,

“Kelvin, remember that time we got caught in the rain after your secondary school debate? You insisted we still walk home just to prove you weren’t afraid of rain?”

She laughed again. “We were soaked and miserable, but you carried my bag all the way. I’ll never forget how you wrung out your shirt right in front of the gate.”

Everyone laughed. Even his mom added, “That’s the Kelvin I know stubborn but sweet.”

I smiled too. On the outside.

But inside, I was breaking.

It wasn’t just a story. It was a reminder. A carefully placed seed of nostalgia one I couldn’t compete with.

Kelvin smiled faintly and said, “Yeah, I remember,” before turning to ask if I wanted more juice, like that would erase what just happened.

But these “harmless memories” kept stacking. Slowly, subtly, Anita was reminding everyone especially Kelvin of who she used to be to him. And I… I started to wonder if I was just a replacement for a decision he never truly accepted.
