Cryptic Mysteries

Hey everyone, I'm new here. This is my first insight and I hope you like it and for future references, I love writing in first person to better personalise the message. Have a fun reading šŸæ

Chapter One

"You can't lock me in here! They say this place is haunted!" I screamed, pounding on the old wooden door. "Please... let me out!"

A burst of laughter echoed from the other side.

"Haunted?" Sally mocked. "Then you might as well go to hell. I've had enough of you already."

I tried to protest but before I could speak again, something cold wrapped around my hand.

My entire body froze.

Without thinking, I yanked my hand away and spun around. Not because I actually wanted to see whatever was trapped in there with me. Honestly, I would've preferred to remain blissfully ignorant. But curiosity... or maybe some weird horror-movie instinct... forced me to look.

I wish it hadn't.

The thing standing before me was enough to make my blood run cold.

And the smell...

I don't even know how to describe it. Something so horribly wrong that my stomach twisted the second I breathed it in.

After that...

Nothing.

I must have passed out because I don't remember another thing.

---

How did I end up locked inside a supposedly haunted room with Sally wishing me dead?

Well...

It all started about three months ago.

My family had just moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles after my dad received a promotion at work. Bigger salary, higher position, bigger apartment.

On paper, everything sounded perfect.

The new place had an indoor swimming pool, a huge garden, and, best of all, an entire room that became my personal study and library.

It was amazing.

It was luxurious.

It was terrible.

Confusing choice of adjectives? Trust me, they all fit.

It was a wonderful house.

Just... not much of a home.

The move changed everything.

Dad barely had time for our usual conversations anymore. He was always buried under paperwork or answering work calls.

Mum had never really been the "How was school, sweetie?" type, and with Dad constantly busy, I was mostly left alone.

So I did the only thing I knew how to do.

I buried myself in books.

Being a nerd wasn't exactly a new hobby. It was more of a personality trait.

It took Dad almost a month to find a school he thought was "the right fit."

Finally, on a Tuesday...

Ugh.

I hate Tuesdays.

Dad walked me into the principal's office, and after five hundred thousand years listening to adults discuss paperwork while signing forms that probably no one would ever read again,Ā I was given directions to my classroom.

I adjusted my glasses, lifted my chin, squared my shoulders, and marched confidently down the hallway.

Then I confidently walked into the wrong classroom.

Thrice

🫄...

By the time I found the correct one, my confidence had packed its bags and moved to mars ahead of us apparently to start a new life.

Standing outside the classroom, I sighed.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna trip sometimeĀ

Yeah maybe drop lunch

Yeah maybe accidentally hit somebody in the eye and create a lifelong nemesis

Then I shrugged.

Honestly... who cares?

I'm a nerd.

It's either they accept me... or they don't.

I'll just be me.

Maybe eventually I'll get a real friend,Ā like Veronica.

My old school wasn't perfect, but Veronica made every day feel worth it.

We had the best memories together.

But that's a story for another time.

The teacher welcomed me in, asked me to introduce myself, then pointed toward an empty seat near the back of the class.

I had barely taken two steps before someone's foot slid into my path.

And...

Yep.

I tripped.

Didn't I literally predict this?

Before I could hit the floor properly, someone grabbed my arm and helped me up.

Some dude.

It was so funny.Ā

He handed me a neatly folded handkerchief like we'd just stepped into some overly dramatic romance movie.

I stared at him.

Seriously bruh??

Why would you help me?

Congratulations. You've just painted a giant target on my back!!

I think the expression on my face probably looked like I was trying to telepathically tell him,

"Depart from me, you demon!!"

He either didn't notice...

...or chose to ignore it.

Then I looked toward the girl who had tripped me.

Sally.

The expression on her face wasn't just annoyance.

It was fury.

A dangerous mix of shock, jealousy, and anger.

I frowned.

What's her problem?

Then i figured..

He was her boyfriend!

My heart nearly stopped.

Well...

I'm cooked!
