The Eight Floor (Chapter 1)

I remember that fateful day. My bus was late, and I got to my hotel at an ungodly hour. I was extremely tired. It was my aunt's wedding and we decided to stay for the night and leave for home the next morning. My mum had booked the hotel well in advance. Conversing with her sister, as the aching in my heart for a bed increased, I told her I would go to the hotel myself.

I walked in, a little wet from the slight drizzle, and checked in. The receptionist told me my room number while writing it down on a card. Her accent was unclear, so I decided to rely on the card instead.

Unfortunately, I forgot to ask if she had studied medicine in college, because I strained my eyes trying to make sense of what she'd written.

"Boom... Oh. Room 8... or 3? 3! Room 3. This should be the floor. Floor 8 or 3... no, this one is definitely more like an 8. So, room 3, floor 8."

I felt like I'd won an Oscar for deciphering that message. Maybe I should have.

I walked into the elevator, and my doubts were immediately calmed. The number 8 stood at the very top of the panel.

I pressed it and sighed as the elevator began to rise. I was exhausted.
