I survived long enough to read them.

The more I read, the more I feared.

I learned to hate the night.

Until I realized the night was never outside me.

It was part of me.

I wasn't ready for the day, but it could not always be night.

So I forgave the night.

In doing so, I discovered I was really forgiving myself.

The hardest person I have ever had to forgive is me.

For years, I mistook my reflection for my enemy. Then I remembered what God said:

"Love thy enemy."

So I loved myself.

Not because I was blameless.

Not because I had earned it.

But because grace cannot bloom in soil poisoned by self-hatred.

The hardest prison I have ever escaped...

...was myself.

Amen.
