IF YOU HAVE EVER DREAMT ABOUT MARRYING SOMEONE, PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU CALL IT A PROPHECY.

There is something we don't talk about enough in Christian relationships: You can genuinely love God and still misinterpret what you believe God is saying. I know this because I once stayed in a relationship for over two years because I was convinced I had received divine direction. I had a dream. And because I wanted so badly to obey God concerning marriage, I treated that dream like a final verdict. I didn't ask enough questions. I didn't test it deeply enough. I simply concluded, “God has shown me my wife.” And once I attached God's name to it, leaving the relationship began to feel like disobedience. That is where many people get trapped. They don't necessarily stay because the relationship is healthy. They stay because they are afraid that leaving means they are walking away from God's will. So they endure what they shouldn't. They ignore character. They ignore incompatibility. They ignore wise counsel. They ignore the absence of peace. And whenever something feels wrong, they say: “But I dreamt about this person.” Please understand this: A dream can be genuine without being a divine instruction. You can dream about someone and it doesn't automatically mean you should marry them. You can dream about your wedding and it doesn't automatically mean the person in the dream is your spouse. You can even have a powerful spiritual experience and still need to discern what it means. That's why you must never make marriage decisions based on one spiritual experience. Test everything. Does it agree with Scripture? What does the person's character reveal? What do mature, godly people around you see? What kind of fruit does the relationship produce? Are you becoming more like Christ or becoming spiritually drained? Is there genuine peace, or are you constantly trying to convince yourself that everything is okay because of what you saw in a dream? And here's a question that can be painfully revealing: If I had never had that dream, would I still choose this person? Sit with that question. Because sometimes, you are not holding onto the person. You are holding onto the interpretation. And sometimes, you are not afraid of losing the relationship. You are afraid that leaving means you have disobeyed God. But God does not need you to ignore His Word in order to obey Him. He doesn't need you to call misery “your cross” simply because you once had a dream. And if you ever discover that what you thought was God's leading was actually your interpretation, don't be too proud to admit it. You can say: “Lord, I thought I heard You. If I got it wrong, please redirect me.” That prayer may save you from years of unnecessary pain.
