My Friendly Enemy Chp XXI

Chapter Twenty-One: The Last Betrayal

The trial of Barrister Andrew Ikebukwu became one of the most talked-about criminal cases in Nigeria.

Every hearing attracted journalists, lawyers, business leaders, and ordinary citizens eager to witness the proceedings.

The courtroom was always filled to capacity. The prosecution presented overwhelming evidence. (The recorded video.)

Financial records showing the promised payment.

Phone call logs.

Messages exchanged between Andrew, Chinelo, and the hired assassin.

Finally, the young man whose conscience had saved my life stepped into the witness box.

Calmly and confidently, he narrated everything that had happened.

He explained how Andrew and Chinelo had approached him with an offer to kill me.

He described the meeting in detail and told the court why he had secretly recorded the conversation.

"I could not betray a man who once saved my mother's life," he said.

The courtroom fell silent.

There was very little the defence could say.

Andrew himself eventually stood before the court.

He looked nothing like the confident lawyer the nation once admired.

His shoulders were bent.

His eyes were hollow.

His voice trembled.

"I betrayed my best friend."

He paused, struggling to continue.

"The man I wanted dead trusted me more than he trusted himself."

Tears rolled freely down his face.

"I have no excuse."

"I allowed greed to destroy my conscience, I have sinned against God..."

"...against my friend....and against people who treated me like family."

Many people in the courtroom wiped away tears.

Even the judge remained silent for a few moments before delivering judgment.

After carefully reviewing the evidence, the judge adjusted his glasses and looked directly at Andrew.

"Barrister Andrew Ikebukwu..."

"You were trusted beyond measure. You were treated as a brother."

"Yet you chose greed over loyalty and repaid kindness with betrayal."

The courtroom was silent enough for a pin to drop.

"This court finds you guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder."

Andrew slowly lowered his head.

"I hereby sentence you to a lengthy term of imprisonment in accordance with the law,and your partner in crime(wife) should pay a 1million fine."

The judge struck the gavel.

"I rest my case."

Court officers immediately moved toward Andrew.

As they prepared to lead him away in handcuffs, the rear doors of the courtroom suddenly opened.

Every head turned. The room became deathly quiet.

A tall man dressed in a dark suit walked calmly into the courtroom.

One step.

Then another. The closer he came, the louder the whispers became.

"It can't be..."

"Is that...?"

"No..."

Andrew slowly lifted his head.

His eyes met mine.

The colour drained from his face.

"C... Clement?"

The courtroom erupted.

Journalists scrambled to their feet.

Camera flashes lit up the room like lightning.

People gasped in disbelief.

Some stood in shock. Others simply stared, unable to believe what they were seeing.

I walked until I stood directly in front of Andrew.

For several seconds...Neither of us spoke.

Tears filled his eyes.

"You..."

"I thought... You were dead."

I looked at him quietly.

"So did you."

He broke down completely.

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

"I was blinded by greed."

"I know."

"I don't deserve your forgiveness."

I sighed deeply.

"Andrew..."

"My greatest pain wasn't that you wanted my wealth."

He looked at me through tears.

"It was that you were willing to take my life to get it."

He covered his face and sobbed uncontrollably.

"I remember two little boys standing beneath a mango tree."

"We promised that no matter where life took us....we would always find each other."

A tear rolled down my cheek.

"I kept my promise, while you broke yours."

Andrew fell to his knees despite the handcuffs around his wrists.

"Clement... Please forgive me."

I stood silently for a moment.

Then I replied softly,

"I forgive you."

The courtroom became still.

"But forgiveness..."

I continued,

"...does not erase consequences."

The officers gently lifted Andrew to his feet.

As they led him toward the exit, he turned one last time.

"I'm sorry... my brother."

I nodded slowly.

"So am I."

The courtroom doors closed behind him.

For the first time in months, I breathed freely.

Justice had been served.

Outside the courthouse, hundreds of journalists surrounded me.

One reporter shouted,

"Mr. Clement, after everything that happened, what lesson has life taught you?"

I looked into the cameras for a long moment before answering.

"My adopted mother warned me with a Yoruba proverb when I was just a little boy."

I smiled sadly.

"Ẹyìnkùlé l'ọta wà, inú ilé làṣẹ̀ní ń gbé."

"The enemies that hurt us the most are often those we trust the most."

I paused.

"But my story is not about teaching people never to trust."

"It's about choosing wisely whom you trust."

"Because betrayal may come from those closest to you..."

"But so can love, loyalty, and the kindness that saves your life."

I glanced toward the sky, remembering the woman who had taken in an orphaned little boy and loved him as her own.

Then I walked down the courthouse steps, where Bukunmi, Tolulope, Toluwani, my adopted mother, and countless well-wishers waited with tears of joy.

As my daughters ran into my arms, I finally understood that wealth was never my greatest blessing.

Family was.

And though one friendship had ended in betrayal...

The love of those who stood by me had given me something far greater.

A second chance at life.

THE END
