Why Luxury?

If I brought you two bags right now;

A Chanel bag and a Tote bag sewn by a roadside tailor.

And I asked you to pick one.

Which would you choose?

Or better still...

An iPhone 16 or an Infinix phone.

You can only take one.

Which one are you reaching for?

The answer is pretty obvious.

Most people would pick the Chanel bag.

Most people would also pick the iPhone.

If I asked why, you'd probably say things like,

"It's better."

"It looks nicer."

"The quality is higher."

"It's expensive for a reason."

Maybe.

But I think there's another reason.

You'll probably pick them because you've been taught that they're 'luxury' products.

Luxury is psychology.

Just like how you were made to believe that buying this for a very expensive price will give you more status in the society than any other products.

Trust me it has nothing to do with quality; most luxury products aren't even of the best quality but still they're more expensive than the ones with higher quality and they're still being bought.

Before you argue with me, hear me out.

Luxury has never been just about quality.

It's about what owning that product says about you.

It's about exclusivity, Scarcity, Status, Identity.

Luxury convinces you that buying a particular product isn't just buying an item...

It's buying a lifestyle, a feeling, a place in a social class.

That's why two products can perform almost the same function, yet one sells for ten or even a hundred times the price.

And people still line up to buy it.

Luxury isn't a new concept either.

For centuries, expensive clothing, jewelry, perfumes, and rare materials have been used to signal wealth and status.

Over time, that idea evolved into the luxury brands we know today; brands that don't just sell products but carefully crafted stories.

And that's where the real deal happens.

Brands don't just market products.

They market perception.

I watched a movie some time ago that explained this perfectly.

A woman created a luxury brand from scratch.

She told people it had been serving "the 1% of the 1%."

That was it.

Just that one story and people believed it.

The brand exploded.

She made an incredible amount of money.

Before you think the buyers were foolish, think about it.

That statement was carefully chosen.

The ultra-wealthy aren't usually influencers showing off every purchase online.

Their recommendations spread quietly, within their own circles.

So when someone hears that a product is exclusive to people they aspire to be like...

Curiosity turns into desire.

Desire turns into demand.

That's psychology.

The funny part?

The bags were produced by ordinary young people in local workshops, shipped abroad, and then reintroduced as an exclusive luxury product.

She was eventually caught.

But that's not really the point.

The point is that the story became more valuable than the product itself.

And if you pay close attention, you'll notice this isn't far from how branding works in real life.

Many premium brands manufacture or source products globally, then add value through design, craftsmanship, marketing, heritage, and, most importantly, perception.

For example;

A luxury products created in china then exported to USA for packaging, marketing and selling.

You would rather buy those products for ridiculously high prices than buy the ones with the tag 'made in china' that are of the same quality but cheaper.

Sometimes, what you're paying for isn't just the product.

You're paying for the logo.

The story.

The exclusivity.

The Status.

None of that happened by accident.

Luxury brands spend decades building trust, scarcity, and desire.

That's why creating a true luxury brand isn't something you wake up and do overnight.

It's years of strategy.

Years of consistency.

Years of making people believe.

So the next time you're about to buy something simply because it has a famous name attached to it...

Pause for a second.

Ask yourself one question.

Do I want the product...

Or do I want the story that comes with it?

So why luxury?
