Okirika boys Ep1: Who goes?

I never knew the first time I'd see my father will be behind bars. I guess chasing the bag finally paid off. Once locked in later locked up. This story is not about our unplanned reunion but the journey down here. From alms to arms, orphans fathered by the streets became kings. I'm sure you've heard about us but if you haven't we are the 'OKIRIKA BOYS'...

The first time I saw Nana was on a school field. It wasn't my school though. We met there regularly to play football before fighting. Yeah, every match was a battle. We somehow found a way to bully the students out of the pitch. We got street education and never envied these kids who spoke fancy English.

Who goes?

Yup that was Nana's first words to me.

Taah, abobi who goes you? That was my response. There was no way this boy was going to tension me on the pitch. Nana was the only student who stood up to us. He was weird in the sense that he was a perfect blend of tush and streets. He effortlessly switched from classy to streets capping. Nana was a legit soldier which earned him the nickname Legion because he was an army of one. Look at us, 12 year old vagabonds. I dare say we grew up too early. Apparently, Nana was a community project because he was sponsored by our community to school.

Like the rest of us he was an orphan of the streets. I dare say we never needed Snr students to guide us as our parents were Snr Men and Aunties who showed us the way... Appian way actually!

...
