A good day to DIE

The class was quiet. Like, the kind of quiet that made faculty members, teachers and other students pass by without pausing. The kind that signified that the classroom was empty. Which was a gross wrong. Because the class was indeed occupied.

Six teenagers.

Teenagers that were smart.

Teenagers that were popular.

Teenagers that were not supposed to be fascinated by the things they were fascinated by.

Teenagers that had a fairly bright future ahead of them if they kept to the rules.

Teenagers that also happened to possess thoughts that would be of great concern to any adult that had a viewing pass into their heads.

Teenagers that spent time brewing in arrogant toxicity that came from endless family wealth.

Teenagers that, as a result, were hovering over a brand new Samsung Galaxy S25, reading an article that was displayed on the screen, as the person holding it, (the owner), scrolled down. Nobody interrupted her flow, because she commanded exclusive handling of the device.

Not that anybody really minded, in all honesty. Just felt 'right' to follow the word of Clarisse Ikechukwu.

After a while, Camilia shot her head up, glaring at her wrist watch. "Come o! Where that girl? She no dey show face again?" Her voice, a fine line between shrill and grounding echoed throughout the empty class.

"Calm down abeg." Everest responded, looking away from the Samsung to his own phone. "She will come. No shaking. She has sense." His voice was slow, low, utterly self-assured.

Camilia snorted, rolling her eyes. "She go shock you." She countered.

"Them no born am well." Daniel interrupted, aiming a glare at Camilia, as if to silent her, his words loud and impossible to ignore. "Na only if teacher call am she go divert." He mumbled for a moment. Then shrugged. "But she go still some."

Camilia twitched her nose in an overly exaggerated way, her upper teeth showing in the act, before glancing at the other two boys, her gaze pausing for a spilt second on Devon, who was busy on his tab. Silence fell over the clique again, broken only by the occasional 'tick' of a sent message, the chime of incoming messages, and the steady 'ra-ta-ta-ta'of perfectly manicured nails against phone screens.

After a while, careful footsteps resounded outside the class, and the door handle twitched. A second of hesitation, and the door creaked open. Slowly. The kind of speed a child stealing money from their father's pocket used. Unnecessarily quiet and desperate not to be caught to the point of obviousness.

A girl stepped in, seventeen years, her black braids tied back, and her glasses tucked in the neckline of her uniform shirt. The picture of a pristine, perfect, exemplary student. She closed the door behind her, quietly, her gaze moving over those in the room.

Who paid her no mind. As if her presence activated the 'pay more attention to your phones' switch. Nervously, clutching a wornout notebook to her chest, Amelia shuffled to the front of the classroom, her legs moving towards the clique in an embarrassingly modest way.

It made Daniel snort.

The silence that lasted was thick and oppressive, and unable to take it anymore, Amelia spoke up. "Uh, emm... guys?"

"Jesus Christ!" Clarisse groaned, her voice pained. She looked up from her device and levelled Amelia with a dirty glare. "Is something wrong with you?" She spat, making Amelia flinch. "What happened to common sense?"

"Na only book this one Sabi." Daniel chuckled mockingly, saluting Amelia.

"As in!" Camilia chimed in, eyeing Amelia, her brown eyes narrowed in disgust.

"Make una no dey confuse am." Everest sat up, cracking his fingers. "You're not an idiot Amelia. The rule is simple: don't speak unless spoken to. Understand?" His voice was as low as always, a steady patronising hum.

Amelia nodded, pressing her book tighter to her chest.

"Now, sit down." He gestured to a free seat beside Devon, who had not looked up since Amelia's entrance.

Shuffling, Amelia moved to the seat, dropping so quietly the chair creaked. She placed her notebook before her and her sweaty palms on her lap.

This was insane. Not even in her wildest dreams was this a possibility. That she, renounced nerd and social outcast, will ever be sitting in the same circle as these six. It made her so giddy her stomach felt queasy.

As she sat, the quiet hum of paying attention to whatever device each person held filled the classroom. However, the second the time struck three thirty, everyone's disposition changed.

Phones went down, smiles died, DND mode activated, and a sudden chill fell over the class in a way that made Amelia's survival instincts start to blare alarm sirens. She shoved them down.

Devon arranged his phone in a way to catch everybody in the room on camera. Amelia did not notice. In fact, the first thing she noticed was when Everest shifted in his seat, and then stood up, walking to the front of the class. He adjusted his tie, arranged his rolled up sleeves around his veiny forearms, and then folded them across his chest, levelling his gaze on Amelia.

"Now, listen very carefully." He drawled off, his voice sultry and yet deadly, like knife sliding through oil. "There is something huge we are planning. Something huge in a mind-blowing way."

He disconnected his gaze from Amelia, looking all around the room, and then back to Amelia. Too quickly. Amelia tensed up again.

"And... we need your assistance."

Amelia gasped, her breath hitching in her chest.

Her help? She? Amelia Balogun. The idea made her vision blurry. Well, more blurry, considering her glasses were currently in her shirt.

"Sure!" She blurted out. "I mean, as long as I know what's happening." She chuckled dryly. Then her eyes widened and her hands flew to cover her mouth when she remembered the 'don't speak unless spoken to' rule.

Everest didn't seem to mind. Instead, his lips quirked a little, a faint sign of approval. "Good." He tilted his head, looking at someone behind Amelia, most likely Clarisse. "I like the energy." He added, then rolled his neck to pop tense muscles. "Problem is... what you just said. Needing to know what's happening."

"You see, this is something that will shake the world. Or at least a portion of it. No cap." Clarisse spoke, her voice moving with suck heavy drawl it was different for Amelia to know if she was sincere or sarcastic. "And we can't tell you what it is until you agree you are in."

Amelia's gut churned as she turned to look at the girl sitting right behind her. Brow arched in violent expectation. Carefully, Amelia glanced around, and saw that literally everybody, except Devon, was looking at her in a similar way: like saying yes now would be for her own good.

'You should never sign a contract without thorough studying.'

That rule echoed somewhere in the back of her head, drummed in by her mother. But right now, the temptation of being with the cool kids, working with them, being in their circle, just overrode the common sense.

"Ok, sure. Whatever. I'm in."

Camilia blinked, and then smirked. Amelia did not like that face.

"Atta girl!" Laughed Daniel. "That's more like it."

Samuel and Devon stayed silent, their faces blank as usual. But as Amelia looked back at a grinning Everest, something told her she had just walked into a lion's den.
