Single to Stupor
<p>I was once <strong>Single</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>a proud noun,</p><p><br/></p><p>standing alone,</p><p><br/></p><p>needing no conjunction.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then Loneliness arrived,</p><p><br/></p><p>not as a visitor,</p><p><br/></p><p>but as an <strong>Alliteration</strong>...</p><p><br/></p><p>repeating itself,</p><p><br/></p><p>night after night.</p><p><br/></p><p>I sought comfort</p><p><br/></p><p>at the bottom of a bottle,</p><p><br/></p><p>where Alcohol became</p><p><br/></p><p>the <strong>Personification</strong> of false hope,</p><p><br/></p><p>whispering,</p><p><br/></p><p>"<strong>One more round, BigDan</strong>..."</p><p><br/></p><p>I drank...</p><p><br/></p><p>until my grammar changed.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sense became <strong>Past Tense</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Wisdom missed its <strong>Subject</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Common Sense became a <strong>Missing Clause</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>My steps formed a crooked <strong>Metaphor</strong>,</p><p><br/></p><p>my speech became an endless <strong>Hyperbole</strong>,</p><p><br/></p><p>and the road home...</p><p><br/></p><p>an unfinished <strong>Ellipsis</strong>...</p><p><br/></p><p>People said,</p><p><br/></p><p>"<strong>BigDan has drunk to stupor</strong>."</p><p><br/></p><p>I disagreed.</p><p><br/></p><p>I hadn't drunk because of alcohol.</p><p><br/></p><p>I had drunk because of <strong>Singleness</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then life laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>The irony</p><p><br/></p><p>that mischievous author</p><p><br/></p><p>introduced me to Love</p><p><br/></p><p>when I wasn't looking.</p><p><br/></p><p>Now I wonder...</p><p><br/></p><p>Perhaps the opposite of <strong>Single</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>isn't <strong>Married</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Perhaps...</p><p><br/></p><p>it's <strong>Stupor</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because somewhere between</p><p><br/></p><p>"I don't need anybody"</p><p><br/></p><p>and</p><p><br/></p><p>"I miss you..."</p><p><br/></p><p>even the strongest sentence</p><p><br/></p><p>forgets its punctuation.</p><p><br/></p><p>And that,</p><p><br/></p><p>dear reader,</p><p><br/></p><p>is the greatest <strong>Oxymoron </strong>of the heart:</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>The more desperately we chase love</strong>...</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>the less clearly we recognise it when it quietly arrives.</strong></p><p><br/></p>
