The Choices That Stay With Us

I sat on a bench, lightheaded, doomscrolling, when a colleague took the last bite of puff puff and Top biscuit, as he dumped both the black and blue nylon on the bare floor.

Although unexpected, as this behaviour is the most common among students in all Nigerian tertiary institutions, I made a friendly command, “Pick that litter from the floor bro,” but he mumbled and did not yield.

Though I have never dumped rubbish on the floor since I've been a university student (I put it in my bag when there is no bin nearby), this uncivil behaviour among students is rather shocking to me.

As we all criticise the banana republic we all found ourselves in, and clamour for change every day, it is sad to see that we the youth fail to make the free choices that stay with us, which no sovereign can snatch away from us.

The local government might not provide waste bins and the state of the country might have rendered the majority of youths powerless in exerting change, but we still have the power to ensure that the environmental condition through plastic pollution remains minimal (we have the choice of not dropping single-use plastic nylons on the bare floor!).

You might think the one you dropped will not make any difference but it does, look around you, and see the ugly face of the soil, a throw from the bus, the one near a stall and the streets took an ugly turn, we can not sit anywhere compared to the 1800s before the invention of plastic, the face of our cities is nothing but a dump!

We can surely do better, youths! This choice stays with us.
