THE GIRL I TRIED TO FORGET

I am roughly jolted awake by the unending chatter and noise from outside. The rush of mothers preparing their children for school, the never ending buzz from the radios, the chatter of people going about their daily activities, the high pitched voice of the ogi seller screaming "e kaaro ologi de oooo......" (I mean does she never get a sore throat from all that shouting?). But amidst all of these, the one sound that always stood out annoyingly was the stupidly harsh crow of the stupid cock that somehow always manages to crow at exactly 7 o'clock in the morning, BY MY WINDOW!!!!!! (I'll kill that bird soon)

My name is Desire, I am a 17 year old girl from a small village in Ogun State, Nigeria. I am a first year student at Chrisland University and this is a "vlog of sorts" of my first summer break after being away from home for almost a year. Fun facts about me: I am a Yoruba girl who is soo into fashionable things and falls in love with almost every "fine boy" I see. I love being a Yoruba girl, cultural dances, my endless strings of Yoruba names, learning my family's oriki, making traditional dishes, learning songs and stories at the feet of my grandparents...

All of these was before I gained admission to study political science at the famous Chrisland University, Abeokuta. Getting into university meant I had to change a lot of things, I had to up my big girl game. I just didn't realise that I had to completely change my choice of music, hairstyles, clothes, ideas, food, lifestyle, thoughts..., basically my entire life. Now my parents aren't Dangote, but they're comfortable enough to send me to a private university without taking out loans so I'll say...pretty comfortable.

My first day at the school was mesmerising, I couldn't keep my mouth closed for more than two seconds. With every turn we made, I was amazed. The place was gorjusssss, and if this was where I'll be spending the next four years of my life, then this was going to be a good season. I resolved there and then, that I wasn't going to "stain" the crisp, sophisticated air with my backward village lifestyle. I was going to be flawlessly elegant, beginning with a harmless change of name from Desire, to Désírè { a Yoruba name meaning: to arrive into goodness}

But now back to the present...yes, summer holiday. Three long months to spend in my hometown that I've painfully tried to wash out of my system for the past nine months. The sound of a commotion outside brought me out of my reverie and I rushed out to officially begin my day. And as if to worsen my already throbbing headache, the stupid cock crowed again. I hate this place.
