THE GIRL I TRIED TO FORGET II

PART TWO

A light tap on my shoulder jolted me out of my reverie, and I sharply turned around, my mouth ready to unleash a torrent of insults. I froze like an antelope in headlights, the words stuck in my throat, my mouth agape like I had just witnessed an unspeakable deed, eyes unblinking as I stared at the beautiful creation standing in front of me.

As I struggled to let out my words, a voice that did not belong to this world asked, “Are you okay? You seem lost.”

I had never been so confused in my life. What should I say? What should I do? What could I say that would be worthy of him?

“My name is George. I school here. Are you okay?”

“Uhm… yes,” I finally sputtered. “I’m a student here too. My name is Desire.”

“Okay, very nice to meet you, Desire.

Are you okay, though? You’ve been standing here for almost an hour now.”

“Oh yes, I’m good. I wanted to explore campus, and I kinda got lost in my thoughts.”

“Well, this is a really terrible place to begin an exploration. I can show you around… if you don’t mind, that is.”

(Are you mad? Why the hell would I mind?)

“Desire, are you cool with me being your tour guide?”

“Oh, yes, of course. I totally mind… I mean, I totally do not mind at all.”

And so it began. We “toured” campus for days, which turned into weeks. We went around so many times that I got tired of the cafeteria by the second day of school.

We enjoyed each other’s company, and I never wanted each day to end. As it went on and on and on, George completely enveloped my mind. I was failing at my academics because if I ever made it to a class, I couldn’t focus on whatever was going on.

I made myself available during every free time he had. We had explored the school grounds so much that we moved on to exploring each other’s lives, and we soon got ready to move on from that too.

One day, we were sitting at an isolated spot on campus, his hands hanging lazily over my shoulders. We had just finished watching a movie on his laptop, and dusk was fast approaching. The air was peaceful. My head was resting on his chest when, suddenly, he grabbed my face, fixed his big, beautiful eyes on mine, and…

“Desireeeeeeeeeee!!!”

That was my grandmother summoning me to do a stupid chore and bringing me back to reality.
