CHAPTER FIVE

FINDING MYSELF

As the years passed, I began to understand myself better. For a long time, I had been focused on surviving. I had spent much of my childhood thinking about food, work, family, and how to get through the next day.

But as I grew older, something began to change.

I started asking myself questions I had never asked before.

Who am I?

What do I want from life?

What kind of person do I want to become?

And most importantly, what can I make out of the life God has given me?

I did not have all the answers, but I knew I wanted my life to mean something.

My childhood had taken away many things from me, including the opportunity to continue my education at the time I wanted. Sometimes, seeing other people move forward made me wonder what my own life could have been like if circumstances had been different.

But I slowly stopped comparing my journey with other people's journeys.

I realized that everyone has a different road to walk.

Mine had started with hardship.

Mine had started with loss.

Mine had started with responsibilities that were far too heavy for a child.

But that did not mean my story had to end there.

I began paying more attention to the things I could do. I discovered that I had abilities and dreams that had been hidden beneath years of struggle. I became interested in learning new things and understanding the world around me.

I also began to appreciate the little opportunities life gave me.

A kind word from someone could give me hope.

A small opportunity could become a stepping stone.

A mistake could become a lesson.

And a difficult experience could become wisdom.

My mother's memory continued to guide me. I remembered how much she loved God and how committed she was to her faith. She never allowed her struggles to completely take away her belief.

I wanted to carry that part of her with me.

There were still days when I missed her deeply. Sometimes I wished I could sit with her and tell her everything that had happened since she left. I wished I could tell her about the challenges I had faced, the things I had learned, and the dreams I was beginning to have.

Perhaps she would have smiled and told me to keep going.

That thought gave me courage.

I also began to understand that finding yourself is not something that happens in one day. It is a journey.

You discover yourself through your experiences.

You discover yourself through the people you meet.

You discover yourself through your mistakes.

You discover yourself through the things you survive.

And sometimes, you discover your strength only after life forces you to use it.

I had spent many years believing that my past was a weakness. Eventually, I realized that my past was also my testimony.

I had survived the loss of my father.

I had survived the loss of my mother.

I had survived separation from my siblings.

I had survived poverty and hardship.

I had survived the uncertainty of growing up without the people I depended on most.

If I had survived all of that, then I knew I could face whatever came next.

My dreams became clearer.

I wanted a better life, not only for myself but also for the people I loved. I wanted to become someone who could look back one day and say, “Everything I went through was not wasted.”

I wanted my story to encourage someone who might be going through a difficult season.

I wanted people to know that a painful beginning does not automatically mean a painful ending.

For the first time, I stopped seeing myself only as the girl who had lost so much.

I began seeing myself as the woman who still had so much to give.

I was finding my voice.

I was finding my courage.

I was finding my purpose.

And although I did not know exactly where the road would lead, I was finally ready to walk it.

I had survived my past. Now, I wanted to build my future.

Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
