<p><strong>Chapter Two — The Day We Lost</strong></p><p>Twenty-four hours earlier.</p><p>Nia woke up to alarms.</p><p>Not her alarm.</p><p>The city's.</p><p>Every screen in her apartment flashed the same message:</p><p><strong>EVACUATION ORDER</strong> — SECTOR 7</p><p>She sat upright.</p><p>“What the hell?”</p><p>Outside, people were running.</p><p>The sky had turned violet.</p><p>Something enormous moved behind the clouds.</p><p>Nia grabbed her jacket and ran downstairs.</p><p>That's when she saw Elias.</p><p>He was standing across the street.</p><p>Waiting for her.</p><p>“You need to come with me.”</p><p>“Why?”</p><p>“Because they're looking for you.”</p><p>Nia laughed nervously.</p><p>“Who?”</p><p>Elias didn't answer.</p><p>Instead, he pulled a small metallic object from his pocket.</p><p>It looked like a broken piece of glass.</p><p>Nia recognized the symbol carved into it.</p><p>The same symbol that had appeared on her mother's old necklace.</p><p>Her mother had disappeared when Nia was twelve.</p><p>Nia stared at the object.</p><p>“Where did you get that?”</p><p>Elias swallowed.</p><p>“From your mother.”</p><p>Nia's heart stopped.</p><p>“My mother is dead.”</p><p>“No.”</p><p>He looked toward the sky.</p><p>“She isn't.”</p><p>A massive explosion shook the street.</p><p>People screamed.</p><p>Elias grabbed Nia's hand.</p><p>“We don't have much time.”</p><p>“Time for what?”</p><p>He looked at her.</p><p>“To stop the future.”</p>
