The massive jaws clamped against his body. “Young prince!” the tortoise called, his voice cut through the jungle. One by one the other animals appeared Monkey raised his hand to his head, when he saw the cub dangling between the jaw of the crocodile. “Ha!” the zebra exclaimed. The rabbits wagged their tails and bursted into laughter. “Karma is real,” one of them said “His father killed my children. Now let him live by this.” Water filled antelope’s eyes, “Oh poor innocent boy” The animals gathered along the riverbank but none dared interfere. Only their voices crashed in the air. “Free him.” “He's the young prince” Back at the den, the lion searched for the cub. “Where could he go?” he muttered His eyes swept grass, trees and bush. Then he then burst across the territory. Searching. Searching. And searching… Nothing. His heart began to pound violently. His golden eyes glistened, darting every direction. A dreadful thought crossed his mind. Perhaps, he had been taken by the rivals. He turned and called the pride “I can't find the prince,” he roared Murmur filled the air. “Search every corner of the jungle. Every hiding place. Every inch of the territory and bring my son back here,” he commanded. As they were about to dash out “Wait!” A voice echoed from the distance. The antelope came running and panting heavily. “The cub had been taken.” Silence… The lions exchanged uneasy glance Slowly, the king moved closer to him. The soft thud of his paws beat against the earth He stopped before antelope and looked into his eyes. “By whom?” The antelope looked down, bowing his head slightly. “At the river. Cro….. crocodile” he said,his voice trembling. The lion threw back his head and roared. The sound tore through the forest Not ordinarily. It carried pain. Anger. Rage. The animals that gathered at the riverside heard it. They all trembled. War is imminent. The crocodile heard it. The cub heard it. Every creature beneath the river heard it and they swam to the surface “What's happening?” the young crocodile asked. Slowly, he swam to the surface. “Father,” he called. “Free the young prince.” The crocodile looked back. No response. The lion sprinted to the river. The earth trembled beneath his paw. His eyes were burning with fury. “Release my son now!” he roared, as he lunged toward the crocodile. The crocodile did not flinched. Rather, he tightened his jaw around the cub’s body The cub cried. “Father! save me!” The lion roared again. “Have you forgetten the rules?” The crocodile looked at the lion and smiled. Not remorseful. No regret. He slightly released his jaw. “I know the rules, but your son violated the rules by trespassing” He clamped his jaw again. The lion moved forward. His heart pounded against his ribs. His nostrils flared with anger. He padded from left to the right. Right to the left. Then he saw it. Something beneath the river… To be continued…..
