The Strange Relationship Between Humans and Procrastination

There is something I don't understand about human beings.

We can know exactly what we need to do, know exactly when we need to do it, know that we will regret not doing it...

and still decide to do absolutely anything else.

You have an assignment.

You have a deadline.

You have told yourself, several times, “I really need to do this today.”

Then somehow, you find yourself cleaning a room that wasn't even dirty.

Why?

You don't know.

You just suddenly feel like now is the perfect time to reorganize your entire life.

Then you tell yourself, “Let me just rest for a little while before I start.”

That's usually how it begins.

You lie down.

You pick up your phone.

You check one message.

Then another.

Then somehow you're watching a video about a man who has spent six years building a swimming pool in his backyard.

You don't need a swimming pool.

You don't even have a backyard.

But you're watching.

Very attentively.

Then you look at the time.

And that little voice in your head says,

“Okay, this is getting serious. We need to start.”

And you say,

“Definitely.”

Then you remember that you haven't eaten.

So you eat.

After eating, you feel sleepy.

So you rest.

And when you wake up, it's somehow 11:47 p.m.

Now you're sitting there, looking at the work you've been avoiding all day, wondering how you got here.

And this is where we bring out our favourite excuse:

“I work better under pressure.”

Do we?

Or have we simply become so good at creating pressure that we've mistaken panic for productivity?

Because somehow, the closer the deadline gets, the more serious we become.

At 10 a.m., we are relaxed.

At 3 p.m., we're still relaxed.

At 7 p.m., we're thinking about starting.

At 11:30 p.m., suddenly we're a different person.

The room is quiet.

The phone is on silent.

The laptop is open.

We're focused.

We're typing like someone is paying us by the word.

And then, after finally finishing at 2 a.m., we make another promise:

“Never again.”

We say it with conviction.

We mean it.

At least for that night.

Then a few days later, we do exactly the same thing.

Maybe that's the funniest thing about procrastination.

We don't really postpone the work.

We postpone the discomfort of starting it.

Because starting means admitting that the thing might be difficult, boring, confusing, or maybe even bigger than we expected.

So we tell ourselves we'll deal with it later.

And later sounds harmless.

Until later becomes tonight.

Tonight becomes tomorrow.

And tomorrow becomes, “Why didn't I just do this when I had the time?”

Maybe we should stop trusting our future selves so much.

Because apparently, our future selves are tired of cleaning up after us.

And yes...

I'm aware of the irony of writing all this instead of doing what I was supposed to be doing🥹😂

Tataa!

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
Top Engagers
For the Top Engagers Track, we award the top 3 people who engage the most with other user's content via
comments.
The winners are picked using the "Top Monthly Engagers" tab on the rankings page.
Most Engaged Content
The Most Engaged Content recognizes users whose content received the most engagement during the month.
We pick the top 3.
The winners are picked using the "Top Monthly Contributors" tab on the rankings page.
Contributor Rankings
The Rankings/Leaderboard shows the Top 20 contributors and engagers on TwoCents a monthly and all-time basis
— as well as the most active colleges (users attending/that attended those colleges)
The all-time contributors ranking is based on the Contributor Score, which is a measure of all the engagement and exposure a contributor's content receives.
The monthly contributors ranking tracks performance of a user's insights for the current month. The monthly and all-time scores are calcuated DIFFERENTLY.
This page also shows the top engagers on an all-time & monthly basis.
