Chapter 1: Hold On,MumI woke up to the sound of the door <a class="tc-blue" href="https://shutting.Still" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">shutting.Still </a> sleepy i,managed to get out of bed.I walked to our balcony and saw my dad helping my mum to the car,her head rested against his shoulder,her eyes closed and she wasn't moving.At that moment,I had a clearer vision of what was happening and immediately I ran downstairs to find out what was going on.Dad,is there a problem...?Yes there is,he said <a class="tc-blue" href="https://faintly.Your" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">faintly.Your </a> mum suddenly slumped,and I have to rush her to the hospital, Oh no,will she be fine....? Can I get to follow..?My love, preparing for school, is the best option right now.I replied quietly, OKAYDad drove off and I went back upstairs crying. Trying to console myself,I picked up my phone to call aunt Sharon(mum's childhood friend).I explained everything in detail and she offered to come pick me up.After the call, I decided to have a warm bath,afterwards I dressed in a sunflower gown,fixed my hair,and packed my school bag and got ready for school. A few minutes later,Aunt Sharon called to let me know she had arrived,and I left for school. On getting to her car I cried for a while but she convinced me to stop."Everything will be fine",she said.We decided to drop by a restaurant to get food and she dropped me off at school. Looking at the gate of Crestwood High School,I already knew this was a bad day.As I walked through the hallway, I headed straight to my locker, took my books, and immediately rushed to class. On my way to class,I met my best friends,Linda and Stacy.Elena,is something wrong..?What's with the look on your face..? As I walked into the classroom,I thought of my mum and what might be happening in the hospital. Good morning, class," Mr. Adrian said with a bright smile. ……..The bell rang,it's the close of the school day.The hallway buzzed with chatter and laughter. Some students walked in groups while others paired off with their friends.Bye Elena,Stacy and Linda said.Bye girls,I replied with a faint smile. I left the hallway and headed toward the school compound. I was confused and didn't know whether to go home or call my dad.After thinking for a while, I decided to call Aunt Sharon.Hey lovie,Aunt Sharon said in a sweet tone, as if everything was fine.Hi, Aunt Sharon, I muttered. Can you please come pick me up from school?And how's my mum doing?.She's doing fine, but I'm busy at the moment. I felt taking a walk around the school could ease my worries,but I didn't know what was lying ahead of me.I got to the school field and some boys were playing ball and that caught my interest..I stood there absentmindedly, watching the boys playing,but my mind was somewhere else.Heads.!!!Before I could react, something slammed my face,that was the only thing I remembered....Girl!,Girl!,Girl!.....I heard that faint voice.My head was banging,my eyes opened and i found myself in the sickbay with some boys which surrounded me and Aunt sharonWhat happened?Why I'm i here....? The nurse examined me and she saw I was doing well..Then she told aunty Sharon I was due to go home.We left the sick bay to the car park. Neither of us spoke during the drive. The only sound was the chirping of the birds and the engine humming as aunt Sharon focused on the road. On our arrival home,I headed straight into my room and about that time I heard the sound of the horn.I stared out of my bedroom window, hoping to see Mum smiling beside Dad like she always did.Instead, the sound of a car horn echoed through the <a class="tc-blue" href="https://compound.My" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">compound.My </a> heart leapt,<a class="tc-blue" href="https://Dad.Without" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dad.Without </a> thinking, I dashed downstairs, almost missing a step. Aunt Sharon called after me, but I didn't stop.I reached the front door and threw it <a class="tc-blue" href="https://open.Dad" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">open.Dad </a> stepped out of the car,his shoulders were <a class="tc-blue" href="https://slumped.His" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">slumped.His </a> eyes swollen and red as if he'd been crying for hours. He looked at me….then looked away quickly.At that point,my heart sank, something wasn't right I said to myself. Quickly, I looked around the car… Dad.. where's mum? I asked,my voice shaking. I didn't get a reply, instead he lowered his head and slowly walked past me into the house. Dad? I called again, following him, Where's mum…? Aunt Sharon stood up immediately.Elena,she said softly,why don't you go upstairs and get some rest. I frowned…NO. A heavy silence filled the room..I've been worried all day. Everyone keeps telling me mum is fine, but nobody is telling me what's going on.Dad let out a deep sigh,I stood there hoping for an answer.Finally,Dad spoke,he looked up at me.Come and sit my princess, on hearing those words my heart kept beating faster.I slowly sat beside him,and was afraid.He held my hands tightly and said….The doctors ran some tests on your mum,he paused for some moments before continuing,they discovered she has a brain tumor.His words echoed in my head over and over again. I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out.I stared at Dad, there has to be a mistake,i mumbled..My princess,I know you love your mum and I love her as much as you do, she's going to be alright, treatment will begin soon and in no time she'll be fine. Lovie, Aunt Sharon called softly as she knelt in front of me.I looked into her eyes and tried holding back my tears. I know it's a lot to take in,she said, her voice calm and reassuring. But listen to me,your mum is still here. The doctors are doing everything they can and now she needs us to believe she'll pull through. I lowered my head. My throat felt tight and no matter how hard I tried,I couldn't bring myself to say a word.Aunt Sharon held my hands tightly. I know you're scared,she continued,anyone would be. Without another word, she wrapped her arms around me. I buried my face in her shoulder, hoping that when I opened them again, everything would be normal and mum would be home smiling, like she always did.After a few moments, she slowly pulled away. You should try to get some rest she said with a gentle smile. I'll come tomorrow and if there's any update from the hospital, you'll be the first to know. She stood and slowly looked over to dad,please call me if anything changes, she said <a class="tc-blue" href="https://quietly.Dad" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">quietly.Dad </a> nodded, I will,Thank you Sharon…….for everything.She gave him a reassuring smile before picking up her bag. At the door she turned to look at me. Be strong for your mum..Okay. I forced myself to nod. With that she left the house, the sound of her footsteps gradually faded until all that remained was the ticking of the wall clock and the painful silence surrounding us. No one spoke,even the air felt heavy. I couldn't stay in the living room anymore, without saying a word, I slowly stood up and walked upstairs. Dad didn't stop me and he didn't follow after me. I sat on my bed still holding mum's cardigan close to me. Time passed,but I couldn't tell how much, at some point I heard movement downstairs,faint steps,plates.Dad was trying, trying to act normal,trying to make everything feel normal like nothing changed.But everything had.A soft knock came to my door later. Elena,dad's voice came gently. I made something small. Will you come downstairs to eat? I didn't move, I'm not hungry,I replied quietly.There was a pause, just a little,he said,please.. I can't,I said faintly. He gave a quiet sigh,okay he said softly.Still holding on to mum's cardigan,it smelled like her and that made everything worse. I want you back home , I miss you, I whispered again.My eyes stared at the ceiling as I laid down on the bed.I tried to sleep but sleep didn't come,i turned to one side then the other, still nothing….Every time I closed my eyes,I saw dad's face and I heard his words again, she has a brain tumor…my chest tightened.I sat up quickly and checked the time.1:21am, the house was silent.I laid back down silently, pulling the blanket over my head holding mum's cardigan even tighter. And after a long time………between fear and exhaustion. I drifted…..
