There’s nothing basic about being basic :entry 2

It took me quite a while to know what I love doing. I had the impression that what I loved to do had to be something unique, so I neglected what I loved to do. Ironically, the things I love to do are the common things: reading, sleeping, singing, eating, writing and painting

These are basic things, and anytime someone asks me, “What do you love to do?” I’m always shy to let them know. What if I’m not liked or seen as worthy to be friends with because the things I love to do are basic?

Who told me that basic was wrong?

All my life, I tried so hard to portray myself in a different light that the basic me was pushed underneath the surface. I tried so hard to fabricate a version of me that I wanted the world to see; I forgot that the basic me was still present.

There’s nothing basic about being basic.

Reading books has a way of opening up your imagination. Ten people can read a single line in a book and interpret it in ten different ways, and I think that’s amazing.

Hiding the fact that I can sing made me ignorant of a lot of things concerning the musical field. I joined a choir in my school chapel, and it’s made me realise that there’s still a lot I do not know. When I was in secondary school, I thought singing only required you to know how to sing and you were set for life. I came to university and realised that there’s a whole lot I don’t know how to do.

I remember them asking me to part a song, and I was so confused, but I can do that now 😂. Singing isn’t as basic as I thought it was.

Sleeping ?Oh ,what a concept. I love sleeping. God really knew what He was doing when He created sleep. As a medical student, sleeping becomes even more fascinating to me because I know how it works, the hormones released, and how much it helps us as individuals.

Lastly, we have eating. I don’t think I really need to say much about food. When I was younger, I heard I shouldn’t like food too much because guys don’t like girls who like food. That’s such a silly trope. So I should pretend I hate food to get a guy to like me? Oh well.

All these things are seen as basic to the average person, but the concept of each of these things is so beautiful. If being basic is to be basic, then I don’t mind being basic.
