Unapologetically Chinagorom.

I had a brief conversation with Chisom yesterday.

Actually, let me correct myself—she prefers to be called Emily. Every time I referred to her as Chisom, it felt as though I were piercing her soul with a spear. Her reaction made me pause and reflect:

What is happening to our mother tongue? Have we lost pride in our fatherland?

I want to be a proud Nigerian. I want to be addressed by my native name and feel completely at peace with it. I want to confidently wear my cultural attire without being questioned or dismissed as "local." I want to speak to my brothers in our mother tongue without receiving glances of disgust.

My name is Ezekiel Chinagorom Okeke. I hail from Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria. And I am a proud Nigerian.
