Until the Mask Fits
<p>Let's play pretend that you are <strong>mine,</strong></p><p>and we can make the dark world shine.</p><p>We close our eyes to hide the pain,</p><p>and dance together in the rain.</p><p><br/></p><p>We lock the door against the cold,</p><p>and promise that we will grow old.</p><p>We whisper words that sound so sweet,</p><p>to drown the shadows at our feet.</p><p><br/></p><p>Let's play pretend we feel no fear,</p><p>as days turn into one long year.</p><p>We buy a house with creaky stairs,</p><p>and act like somebody who cares.</p><p><br/></p><p>We pull the blankets to our chin,</p><p>and let the quiet fake warmth in.</p><p>We hold each other through the night,</p><p>and pray the morning brings no light.</p><p><br/></p><p>Let's play pretend our hair turns gray,</p><p>and we still have so much to say.</p><p>We sit together on the porch,</p><p>and hold a long-extinguished torch.</p><p><br/></p><p>We trace the lines upon our skin,</p><p>and wonder where the lies begin.</p><p>We rock in chairs that creak and groan,</p><p>to fight the fact that we're alone.</p><p><br/></p><p>Let's play pretend we made it through,</p><p>a lifetime built on nothing true.</p><p>We raise a glass to wasted time,</p><p>and call this tragic script divine.</p><p><br/></p><p>We close our eyes and count to ten,</p><p>then start the story up again.</p><p>We wear the mask until the end,</p><p>and die inside this play pretend.</p>
