'We've never had it this bad'. I have heard a couple of people say this in recent times, when speaking on the state of the country. I however do not know if this is true, as I haven't lived through a lot of decades to make any comparison. What I do know, is that we are living through terrible conditions as a people. Fuel scarcity, depleted power supply, inflation and insecurity. These are a few of the things Nigerians have had to live with. And it's baffling that it seems to get worse as we draw closer to the 2023 Presidential elections.
Recently I took out the time to ponder on this. Why are things seemingly deteriorating as we get closer to electing a new president. And I came to the conclusion that it may be a necessary condition. What I mean by a necessary condition, is that; we may need to experience this much hardship in order to make the right choice. Comfort can be dangerous. And maybe if we experienced a bit of comfort, we would be susceptible to making a wrong choice.
But with the hardship, there would likely be a general resolve and clamour for change. People have to realize that there is something that can be done to ease the suffering. And this is ensuring that the right man is put in power. We should also consider that most positive changes come after a phase of discomfort and despair. The best and sharpest swords, have to be forged in extreme heat.
Perhaps we should view the present state of the nation as the country going through the forge. Maybe this suffering may be the first step in rebirth. Maybe in order to ensure the victory of that candidate we all want, we have to be desperate for a new lease at life.
