When Did Modest Clothing Become "Pick Me" Behavior?

Modesty in clothing used to mean dressing simply, covering up, and focusing on comfort or personal values over showing off. It was about humility and self-respect, often tied to culture, religion, or personal choice. But recently, some people call modest dressing "pick me" behavior—acting like someone’s trying too hard to seem "different" or "pure" to get attention, especially from men.

This shift comes from social media and changing trends. On platforms like Instagram , fashion is often bold and revealing to grab likes and followers. Choosing modest clothes—like long skirts or loose tops—can stand out, but not always positively. Some see it as a calculated move to appear "better" or "unique," like a tactic to win approval. For instance, a woman might wear a modest outfit, but others might label it "pick me" because they think she’s playing a role to seem virtuous. And what hurts and baffles me the most is women calling other women pick me's.

The problem is our quick-to-judge culture. Online, people assume everyone’s performing, so genuine modesty in clothing gets mistaken for a ploy. The term "pick me" is also overused, especially to criticize women’s choices, which blurs what modesty really means. True modest dressing is about personal comfort and values, not seeking validation. The challenge is sticking to your style when society misreads it as something it’s not.

Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
