A Brush With Death (climbing for lust). PART 2.

Part 2: The Sound That Changed Everything

CRAAACK.

It wasn't a loud sound.

It was worse.

It was the sound of certainty disappearing.

For a split second, my brain refused to accept what my ears had heard.

No...

The branch dropped beneath my foot.

My stomach lurched.

Instinct took over.

I threw both hands forward, grabbing at anything within reach. Another branch. A handful of leaves. Rough bark. Anything.

Nothing held.

The world tilted.

Then I was falling.

I remember the strange silence more than anything.

People say you scream when you fall.

I didn't.

It was as if my voice had been trapped somewhere inside my chest.

The sky spun above me.

Green leaves flashed past my face.

Branches whipped across my arms and shoulders as they snapped against my body.

Everything blurred together.

This can't be happening.

I'm falling...

I'm actually falling.

Time slowed in the cruelest way imaginable.

Every second stretched.

Every thought arrived all at once.

What if I hit my head?

What if I break my back?

What if I never stand up again?

For the first time in my seventeen years, death stopped being a story that happened to other people.

It was suddenly close enough to breathe.

Close enough to touch.

I could almost feel it waiting beneath me.

My heart pounded so hard it drowned out every other sound.

I didn't know where the girl was.

I didn't know if she was screaming.

I couldn't even look.

The ground was rushing toward me faster than my mind could keep up.

I wanted to stop.

I wanted to wake up.

I wanted someone—anyone—to catch me before I reached the earth.

But there was no one between me and the ground.

Only air.

Only fear.

Only the terrifying realization that I had no control anymore.

And then...

The ground was right there.

TO BE CONTINUED...
