My Brush With Death (climbing for lust) Part-4

PART 4:

Between Panic and Hope

I stayed there, my palms pressed into the earth, afraid to move another inch.

The pain wasn't just pain anymore.

It was a warning.

Every part of me seemed to whisper the same thing.

Don't move.

I closed my eyes and tried to steady my breathing.

What if I've damaged my spine?

The thought landed with a weight far heavier than my body.

I'd heard stories before—people who climbed trees, fell, and never walked again. Those stories had always felt distant, like they belonged to someone else's life.

Now they were crowding my mind.

Please... don't let that be me.

The girl knelt beside me, her voice breaking.

"I'm so sorry... I'm so, so sorry."

I wanted to tell her it wasn't her fault.

I wanted to ease the fear on her face.

But I was struggling to make sense of my own.

What if this was the last time I would ever stand?

What if I had thrown my future away for a handful of mangoes?

The questions came one after another, leaving no room for answers.

I took another slow breath.

Then, with every ounce of courage I could gather, I bent one knee.

It moved.

Pain shot through me, but it moved.

I bent the other.

It moved too.

A flicker of hope broke through the panic.

Carefully, I shifted my weight.

My arms trembled.

My legs shook beneath me.

For a terrifying moment, I thought they would give way.

I gritted my teeth.

Come on... just stand.

Slowly... painfully... I pushed myself upright.

The world swayed.

The tree seemed to lean toward me.

I stood frozen, waiting to see if my legs would hold.

They did.

Barely.

Every breath hurt. Every muscle protested. My body felt as though it had been hit by a moving vehicle.

I looked up at the tree.

The broken branch was still hanging there, lifeless.

Just minutes earlier, I had trusted it without a second thought.

Now it looked like a silent witness to how quickly an ordinary afternoon had turned into something I would never forget.

I brushed the dirt from my clothes with trembling hands.

There was no triumph.

No pride.

Only disbelief.

One thought kept repeating in my mind:

I almost didn't make it.
