My Brush With Death (climbing for lust).

Part 3: Impact

The ground met me with a force I had never imagined.

Everything happened at once.

A deafening thud.

A sharp burst of pain.

Then... nothing made sense.

For a few seconds, I couldn't tell whether my eyes were open or closed. The sky above me looked distant, almost unreal, as if I were staring at it through water.

Am I... alive?

I didn't dare move.

My heart was pounding so violently that I could hear it inside my ears.

Can I still feel my legs?

That question came before any other.

Not, How badly am I hurt?

Not, Did anyone see me?

Just...

Can I move?

I tried to lift a finger.

It twitched.

A tiny movement.

But it was enough to make me hope.

Then the pain arrived.

Not all at once.

It spread through my body like fire finding dry grass—my back... my arms... my ribs... every breath reminding me that something had gone terribly wrong.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

Please... don't let anything be broken.

Somewhere nearby, I heard hurried footsteps crashing through the dry leaves.

Then a voice.

"Stephen!"

Another voice followed, louder this time, trembling with panic.

"Stephen! Answer me!"

It was the girl.

The same girl I had wanted to impress only moments earlier.

I wanted to tell her I was fine.

I wanted to laugh it off.

Instead, all that came out was a weak groan.

Her footsteps stopped beside me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I could feel her standing there, frozen.

Maybe she was just as shocked as I was.

Maybe she couldn't believe that only a few minutes earlier, I had been smiling from the top of that tree.

Now I was lying beneath it, staring at the branches that had betrayed me.

I could hear my own breathing—short, uneven, and shaky.

The silence felt heavy.

Then a terrifying thought crept into my mind.

What if I can't get up?

I swallowed hard.

I wanted to try.

I needed to know.

Slowly... carefully... I planted my hands against the ground and began to push myself up.

The pain exploded through my body.

I froze.

My breath caught in my throat.

Something isn't right...
