I noticed something about myself lately. I was having a conversation with someone, but I did not realize when my mind drifted away from it. I also found a video on my phone that I don’t remember downloading. It felt familiar, but I kept asking myself, when did this even happen?

Social media can push information with the algorithm, but the depth that books carry cannot be measured. Information can fly on social media, but it does not always stay long enough to become action. It only reaches the ears.

If you notice, most of the things written or said on social media that carry depth were originally from a book.

Books VS Social Media

Dear Readers,

This is a note to you.

For every book you’ve read, and everything you’ve heard from a book that has impacted your life, please mention it in the comment section.

I was 12 when I read the Bible—Ecclesiastes and Proverbs in particular—and it gave me wisdom and insight on how a capable woman behaves. The words made me want to continue reading. The wisdom felt unending. I read more, like the Ten Commandments as a foundation for my growth, and in Matthew where Jesus taught us to pray. Those words are still in my heart till today. Most children still say those prayers in school, and they were written a long time ago in a book.

But ask me now the five videos I watched on TikTok for the past few months, honestly I don’t remember after scrolling or reading arguments on X. I don’t remember.

Why?

Because my attention feels scattered. One video leads quickly to another, and my mind gets pulled away before I can fully hold what I just saw. It only stays for a short time and then disappears. It feels like trying to keep up with trends, and honestly, it can feel overwhelming.

Now it brings me to the topic we have on ground.

Has social media replaced the real drivers of information and knowledge?

Tell me your honest opinion.

Before you share—do you remember the past few videos you watched a month ago?

Social media, with the algorithm, drives information at a fast pace. We view, comment, like, and scroll. A lot reaches us, but little stays.

It also changes how fast our minds expect information. Everything feels instant, and even small delays make us impatient. Sometimes, even losing WiFi shows how restless it can make us. It becomes harder to pause, reflect, or sit with our thoughts. Instead of being present, we keep scrolling.

At the same time, social media can also help. I have seen things there that helped me when I took action. It can guide and inform in the moment.

It has played a role in my life in recent weeks.

But now let's look at the distribution of books and the distribution of information on social media, which one do you think carries more depth?

I read a book a few months ago, and the author went deeply into emotion. He spoke about how his brother was the first to read it and how long it took him to write it. It went through editors, and the author even asked for permission from the person he was writing about before publishing. And these was stated in the book. That process stayed with me for months. The book took me on a journey,a beautiful rollercoaster ride and it was amazing.

I wish it could feel the same with social media—access to information, movies, and even rumors. The feeling after scrolling is not the same as reading a book that stays with you.

Because behind a book, there is effort, time, and emotional investment.

I feel like the real comparison should be a good movie versus reading an amazing book.
