EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE: The Best Teacher

There is a popular saying that "experience is the best teacher." While many people accept this statement without question, I see experience from a slightly different perspective. Experience is an active process of reliving and interpreting past events. It may not be an exact replica of what happened before, but it is always connected to the past in one way or another. This connection is what makes experience valuable. It allows us to revisit previous situations, draw lessons from them, and make better decisions in the present.

The relationship between experience and history is impossible to ignore. We are often reminded that "history must not repeat itself." The similarity between experience and history lies in one word: "the past." History records the collective experiences of societies, nations, and civilizations, while experience reflects the personal journey of an individual. Both exist to preserve lessons rather than memories alone. However, experience differs from one person to another because no two people encounter life in exactly the same way. Two individuals may go through similar events yet arrive at completely different conclusions. This is why experience should never be judged solely by its outcome but by the wisdom gained through reflection.

Experience also extends beyond life's successes and failures. It is built through constant learning, practice, and dedication. In every profession, experience is earned over time. An experienced tailor develops precision through countless stitches. A barber gains confidence after years of serving different clients. A carpenter perfects craftsmanship by working with various materials and designs. A surgeon improves judgment through years of training and carefully performed procedures. In each case, experience is not simply the passage of time but the accumulation of knowledge, repeated practice, observation, adaptation, and continuous improvement. Research in psychology and education supports this understanding, showing that people learn more effectively when they reflect on their actions and apply those lessons to future situations. In other words, experience becomes meaningful only when it is combined with thoughtful reflection.

Ultimately, experience is one of life's greatest assets because it transforms information into understanding and mistakes into wisdom. It teaches patience, resilience, and sound judgment in ways that books alone cannot. Yet experience should never make us arrogant; instead, it should inspire humility, reminding us that learning never truly ends. Every new challenge presents another opportunity to grow, and every past event offers another lesson waiting to be understood. The value of experience is therefore not measured by how long we have lived or worked but by how well we have learned, adapted, and used the lessons of yesterday to shape a better tomorrow.

Written by: Shuaib Abdulbasit Omeiza.
