Harmless Crush

“I Thought the Crush on Him Was Harmless”

just a soft breeze passing through my teenage heart,

a quiet smile I could fold away

like a letter never meant to be sent.

I told myself it was nothing serious,

just a name that sounded sweeter than others,

just a face that stayed a little longer

behind my closed eyes at night.

But years have passed like seasons changing clothes,

and still, he lingers.

I have grown.

I have met new faces, shaken new hands,

laughed in different rooms,

cried for different reasons.

Yet somehow, in the silent corners of my mind,

his memory sits still, unchanged, unaged.

I thought time would dilute him,

like sugar dissolving in tea.

Instead, time preserved him,

like a photograph that refuses to fade.

It is strange how someone

who never held my hand

can still hold my thoughts hostage.

Strange how a story that never began

still feels unfinished.

Sometimes it’s not even him I miss,

but the version of me

who first learned how to feel that deeply.

The girl who blushed at nothing,

who replayed conversations

as if they were love songs.

Maybe that’s why he remains.

because he is tied

to the innocence of my becoming.

To the trembling excitement

of discovering my own heart.

I thought the crush on him was harmless.

I didn’t know it would echo.

Didn’t know a simple affection

could root itself so quietly

and grow in silence.

Even now, years later,

his name can still knock softly

against my memory,

and I answer.

Not because I am still waiting,

not because I am still hoping,

but because some feelings

do not need permission to stay.

They simply do.
