HIS LAST BREATH 🥀
<p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>As I scrolled through my gallery, I came across Calvin’s pictures the one we took after our valedictory service.</p><p><br/></p><p>Tears slipped out of my eyes. 😥</p><p><br/></p><p>August 17, 2022.</p><p><br/></p><p>Around 10 p.m., I received a call from Osas, our mutual friend.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Come to the hospital. Calvin is dying.”</p><p><br/></p><p>My heart sank immediately I heard those words. I felt like my world was ending. 🥺🥺</p><p><br/></p><p>I didn't believe him. I couldn't even say anything. 🤧</p><p><br/></p><p>My dad had to drive me to the general hospital.</p><p><br/></p><p>As I ran through the hospital hallway, I slipped and fell, hurting my ankle. I was too scared to even notice the pain.</p><p><br/></p><p>I finally located ward 9.</p><p><br/></p><p>I opened the door and met my bestie, Calvin.</p><p><br/></p><p>My once agile, energetic boy was lying there, pale and painfully slim.</p><p><br/></p><p>Lifeless.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Chimooo!” 😭😭😭</p><p><br/></p><p>I ran towards him and burst into tears.</p><p><br/></p><p>“How come? I thought you said you were travelling.” 😥</p><p><br/></p><p>He looked at me and replied in an almost inaudible voice.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I didn't want you to see me suffer, my wifey.”</p><p><br/></p><p>That was what he fondly called me.</p><p><br/></p><p>I cried even harder.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Is there hope?” I muttered.</p><p><br/></p><p>“No, baby girl. Today is my last day on earth.”</p><p><br/></p><p>My heart shattered.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I never wanted you to remember me this way. I wanted you to remember me as the strong boy.” 🥺🥺</p><p><br/></p><p>“But, Calvin…”</p><p><br/></p><p>“I know you will definitely hate me if you find out that I died without seeing you. I wanted you to be the last person I see before I die.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“No, Calvin. This can't be true. Remember our dreams together.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Tears slipped down his cheeks.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I don't wanna die, baby girl. I wanna live. I wanna see you become an actress so I can scream to the world that you're my bestie.” 🥺</p><p><br/></p><p>“I wanna live… even if it's for you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I burst into tears.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I promise to marry you. Remember?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Calvin had always playfully told me he will marry me.🥺🥺</p><p><br/></p><p>“No, Calvin. Please, just stay. I can't live without you.” 😭😭</p><p><br/></p><p>“I don't wanna leave you, wifey. I still wanna go to Maldives, your dream country, with you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He suddenly started coughing.</p><p><br/></p><p>“My chest hurts…”</p><p><br/></p><p>I froze.</p><p><br/></p><p>I couldn't believe he had told me he was travelling a month ago while he was actually fighting for his life in the hospital.</p><p><br/></p><p>He didn't want me to see him suffer. 😭</p><p><br/></p><p>No wonder he kept refusing my video calls.</p><p><br/></p><p>Damn.</p><p><br/></p><p>I was a bad friend.</p><p><br/></p><p>Calvin was a sickle cell patient. 😩</p><p><br/></p><p>The only surviving child of his parents.</p><p>Yes they were four children 💔💔💔</p><p>But they died .🥺🥺</p><p>You already know the cause 🤧🤧</p><p>This same sickle cell.</p><p><br/></p><p>I cried and cried.</p><p><br/></p><p>Until around 11 p.m…</p><p><br/></p><p>He gave up.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just like that.</p><p><br/></p><p>Damn.</p><p><br/></p><p>One of the darkest moments of my life.</p><p><br/></p><p>Calvin's burial was one of the cruelest moments I've ever experienced.</p><p><br/></p><p>He took our friendship bracelets with him to the grave.</p><p><br/></p><p>And somehow, four years later, I'm still here, missing him.</p><p><br/></p><p>Wait…</p><p><br/></p><p>Today is August 17.</p><p><br/></p><p>Wow.</p><p><br/></p><p>It's been four years without Calvin.</p><p><br/></p><p>Four years since his last breath.</p><p><br/></p><p>Four years since I heard his voice.</p><p><br/></p><p>Four years since my best friend left me.</p><p><br/></p><p>And honestly?</p><p><br/></p><p>I don't think I'll ever forgive sickle cell. 💔</p>
